Captain Mike Yates - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Captain Mike Yates is a fictional character in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, played by Richard Franklin.
Yates was a fairly non-descript character, typical of the British Army officer class, and little is known of him outside of his time with UNIT.
In the Virgin Missing Adventures novels The Eye of the Giant by Christopher Bulis and The Scales of Injustice by Gary Russell, Yates began as a sergeant in UNIT together with Benton and was promoted to Captain at the end of Scales, which took place between the television stories Inferno and Terror of the Autons.

Yates' time with UNIT comes to a close when he falls under the spell of Operation Golden Age, an organization dedicated to bringing about world peace by turning back time to a simpler age, and allowing their devotees to guide the citizens of the Earth's past to a more enlightened future, without war or pollution.

With Captain Mike Yates little more than a minor player in the Pertwee years, Franklin nevertheless paints the character as a lynchpin of UNIT.
Franklin’s version of Yates treats Benton like an idiot (while the Sergeant is also lumbered with a strange West Country accent and a severely reduced IQ), while the Brigadier fawns over Yates and praises his every move.
Worse, though, are Franklin’s additions to Yates’ life, which portray him as some sort of James Bond: living in a country pile, an expert in antiques, a master of disguise and a man capable of devising cunning plots.
