Born in Lyallpur (now Faisalabad) in 1910 in a family from Sanghori, District Rawalpindi, Captain Sarwar was commissioned to the Punjab Regiment in 1944.
Displaying remarkable courage and leadership, Captain Sarwar led a platoon in a flanking movement to within twenty yards of the enemy bunkers.
Captain Sarwar thus became the first soldier to be awarded Pakistan's highest gallantry award of Nishan-e-Haider.

KARACHI: Former Pakistan hockey captain Muhammad Sarwar was on Monday given a warm send-off by his team-mates and the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) officials after the seasoned forward announced his retirement from international hockey.
Sarwar, who led Pakistan in 2000 and 2001, told reporters that he had decided to hang up his boots after being overlooked by the national selectors in an 18-member team announced for next month's Champions Trophy in Amstelveen (Holland) and September's Asia Cup in Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.
The 28-year-old Sarwar said that he personally felt he was still fit to play international hockey but added that he respected the PHF decision to induct younger players in the side.

Sarwar was finally shown the door by the national selectors soon after the trials for last year's Amstelveen Champions Trophy, forcing him to call it a day.

Throughout, undaunghted by constant fire from enemy small arms, tanks and artillery, he organized the Defence of the canal, directing his men to answer the fire until he was hit by an enemy tank shell which killed him on 10th September 1965.
When he spotted the enemy digging in along a minefield near the village of Harar Khurd in December 1971 on his own initiative he directed accurate fire at the enemy resulting in the destruction of sixteen of their tanks.

Sarwar, who has led Pakistan since former captain Ahmed Alam announced his retirement in 2001, has been out-of-form in a number of international events during last year - a poor patch that finally resulted in a drastic decision from the hockey bosses.
