Known as Captain Sensible, Raymond Burns, was born in Balham on 24 April 1954,.
Together with Dave Vanian and Brian James, Miller (Rat Scabies) and Burns (Captain Sensible) formed what was to be one of the major punk bands of the period: the Damned.
A riotous character with an unnerving sense of charm, Sensible frequently performed at gigs dressed in various guises, often in a tu-tu, a nurse’s uniform or even nothing at all.

During the early 1980's some songs by Captain Sensible were performed, and even recorded, with the Damned, as well as surfacing under his own name.
In 1987, Captain Sensible hooked up with Martin Newell (The Cleaners from Venus, The Brotherhood of Lizards), thus ending the long working relationship with Tony Mansfield.

Sensible was able to indulge his esoteric taste in music by carving out a solo career by accident rather than design, owing to the frequent bouts of forced inactivity by the Damned.
Although he was keen not to let his solo success interfere with the Damned's activities, Sensible found himself gradually becoming isolated from the other members due to internal politics and managerial disputes, resulting in his leaving the band in 1984, although he occasionally dropped in to guest on live performances.

You might think that Punk's oldest and arguably most consistent institution would rather be putting their slipper clad feet up, but according to the amiable and upbeat Captain Sensible this couldn't be further from the truth.
Light hearted, inter-band ribbing or not, this attitude and quest for perfection is seemingly what's kept the Damned relevant to this day and less likely to see them falling into that nostalgic "ah wasn't everything fantastic" reminiscing that punk rock set out to collectively piss upon all those years ago.
Expect great things from Vanian, Sensible and Co on the 26th, but be prepared to give something back… or they'll be trouble.

Captain Sensible was bassist/guitarist from the beginning up 'til around 1984 when he embarked fully on his solo career.
As usual, Captain covers/pokes fun at several topics: politics, the rich, religion, the royal family, England, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, the lottery, animal rights/vegetarianism, and "one hit wonders" (which, technically, Captain is himself), all in the typically cheeky Sensible style.
Of Sensible's half dozen or so solo albums to date, this one is his best and is rapidly becoming one of my all time favorites.

 DEAD MEN WALKING...Captain Sensible returns to CBGB
This show was Captain Sensible's first gig at CBGB since he played there with The Damned in April 1977, shows at which the Dead Boys opened up for them.
According to original Damned guitarist Brian James, The Damned went to the gig anyway and stood there intimidating Television by wearing t-shirts that said, "Television are cunts." The Damned went on to record a song called "Idiot Box" about them.
