		Captain Swing played and Mike Griffiths called to a large crowd - about 30-40% children - who thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
		I have not appreciated the fare served up by Captain Swing on the last couple of times I have danced to them.
		Like many other bands (Banjax come to mind) Captain Swing have strayed far away from the English idiom at times and there has been an awkward fusion between the dances and their music.

		So i figured this "Captain Swing" to be some kind of a leader of the human resistance against the threatening dominance of the machines, a real-world predecessor to movie characters like John Connor or Neo (of Terminator and Matrix movies fame).
		Rather, Captain Swing was a non-existing mystical figure (as was the leader of the Luddites, Ned Ludd).
		The swing rioters just used "Captain Swing" as a macabre signature alias in their threatening letters to the owners of the machines ("swing" obviously aiming to remind the machine owners of their dead bodies swinging from the gallows).

	Captain Swing Riots 1830 to 1831 - VillageNet History
		The population growth after the Napoleonic Wars increased significantly due to the soldiers returning home, and by the 1830's many of the villages in Kent and East Sussex were filled with people living on the edge of starvation.
		The riots started in East Kent and reached the Weald area by November 1831, the main reason for the riots were the low wages paid by farmers, which in turn meant that the merchants were also effected, by limited sales.
		The name "Captain Swing" riots came from the threatening letters which were often signed Swing after people swinging from the gallows, the leaders were known as "The Captain" or "Swing" to try to hide their identity.

		Despite the detail of their account (the really heavy data is consigned to the sixty pages of appendices), Hobsbawm and Rudé succeeded in producing a remarkably approachable work of social history, and Pimlico are to be applauded for reissuing their classic study.

		Not every song on Michelle Shocked's Captain Swing has horns, but those that do are my favorite moments on this album and also responsible for making this my favorite Shocked album, although I also quite like Short Sharp Shocked and Arkansas Traveler.
		For Captain Swing, the pendulum had swung all the way over into lush production although not so much that it overshadows Shocked's clever songwriting, but does transform her at least somewhat from the doyenne of the piney woods past the "skateboarding punk rocker" into a folky k.d.

		Captain Swing is an enjoyable collaboration between E. Hobsbawm and George Rude that depicts the social history of the English agricultural wage-laborers’ uprising of 1830.
		I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone who desires and in-depth description of the social causes of a rebellion by men who many believed did not have it in them to rebel.
