So i figured this "Captain Swing" to be some kind of a leader of the human resistance against the threatening dominance of the machines, a real-world predecessor to movie characters like John Connor or Neo (of Terminator and Matrix movies fame).
Rather, Captain Swing was a non-existing mystical figure (as was the leader of the Luddites, Ned Ludd).
The swing rioters just used "Captain Swing" as a macabre signature alias in their threatening letters to the owners of the machines ("swing" obviously aiming to remind the machine owners of their dead bodies swinging from the gallows).

But despite our misgivings (and earlier confusion about the whole Dandelion being Captain Swing thing), Pistol and Avon could vouch for his whereabouts over the last month, and there was no way he could have been involved.
We assumed that Captain Swing had laid in wait here until it was time for him to perform his wicked deed.

Captain Swing (Eric Hobsbawm, George Rude) - review
Captain Swing is a splendid study of the wave of agrarian unrest which swept south and eastern England towards the end of 1830.
With painstaking research the authors have managed to reconstruct, in some detail, the events of that year, as well as the subsequent history of those rioters who were transported to Australia.
Despite the detail of their account (the really heavy data is consigned to the sixty pages of appendices), Hobsbawm and Rudé succeeded in producing a remarkably approachable work of social history, and Pimlico are to be applauded for reissuing their classic study.

However, the artist's sly and often insightful lyrics remain true to Shocked's vision, and are rightfully at the center of her compositions.
