Caption - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A caption is a concise and descriptive bit of text that labels a picture, chart, or table.
Closed captioning is used to provide the text of a show's audio portion to those who may have trouble hearing it.
The caption of a lawsuit or other legal document refers to that portion of the document containing the names of the parties and the case number.

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Bush and turkey caption competition
Firstly, it must be said that the response was a little overwhelming, with an overflowing inbox full of subject lines ranging from the obvious "gobble, gobble" (350 entries) to "that turkey must be called Monica" (300 entries) or "looks like that turkey's applying to be an intern" (one entry received every 30 seconds).
On the downside, those of you who understood a caption to be a 500-word analysis of George Bush's foreign policy were perhaps slightly missing the point.
Apologies to those who sent in similar captions to the winning entries, but were not chosen - when there was duplication, the entries were put into a hat and chosen at random.

 Tables
The table and caption boxes retain their own content, padding, margin, and border areas, and the dimensions of the rectangular anonymous box are the smallest required to contain both.
A caption that is above or below a table box also behaves like a block box for width calculations; the width is computed with respect to the width of the table box's containing block.
For a caption that is on the left or right side of a table box, on the other hand, a value other than 'auto' for 'width' sets the width explicitly, but 'auto' tells the user agent to chose a "reasonable width".

Part of it comes from audience feedback from my seminars and articles about captioning, and specifically from the column I write for the Journal of Court Reporting and the one I used to write for Newswaves.
The terminology and focus of this FAQ is currently Line 21 captioning on NTSC video - which means mostly the United States and Canada.

The CAPTION element is an optional table component which displays a caption/title for the table directly above, below or to either side of the table.
The CAPTION element is contained within the TABLE element, but is used at the same level as the table row element [TR] is.
The Tables specification says the CAPTION element should always come at the beginning of a table structure (this is to ensure proper rendering in progressive table display.) I have yet to see a browser misbehave if the CAPTION is placed say, just before the end of a table structure.
