 Musclecarclub.com - Muscle Car Engines
In a nod to the performance market that was driving muscle car sales, Buick quietly introduced a rare dealer installed option in 1968 which treated the 400 cid engine with a hotter cam, 11.0:1 compression, stronger valve springs and a reworked transmission.
This level of engine ratings were unheard of in an era when other manufacturer's engines' output were falling dramatically, and the Firebird became the only true performance car remaining in the market.
The primary difference between this engine and the 413 Max Wedge, of course, was the larger bore of 4.25 inches, resulting in 426 ci.

Car Engines - Basic Guide on Engine Functions and Maintainance
The engine is the heart and soul of your car, but instead of pumping plasma blood around veins, the engine pushes petrol and airl.
The main focus of the engine is to transform the air and petrol into rotary motion so it can drive the wheels of the car.
When an engine is an "interference engine" the pistons and valves are so close together that if the valves were to stop moving (broken belt or chain) and the crankshaft kept spinning they would crash into the piston.

Frequently Asked Questions About Model Car Engines by RcTek   (Site not responding. Last check: )
It is quite easy to modify an engine and get 5 or 6 horsepower, but it is also very easy to have an unusable engine because there is no power low down in the revs.
An engine that produces a spread of power across the entire usable rev range (6,000 to 20,000 or more) will be quicker on the track with 4 to 4.5 bhp, than an engine with 5 to 6 bhp which only produces the power high up in the rev range.
If an engine has been modified and is significantly worse on fuel consumption than it was before, the alterations that have been made are not working efficiently and are wasting fuel.

Pontiac 455 Buildup- Car Craft Magazine
So, after seeing how well-preserved the engine's internals were, we got to thinking that prior to actually rebuilding it, it might make a suitable test mule to show the effects of bolt-on upgrades to a stock, used engine that was still in good health.
Our engine came from a '76 Grand Prix, placing it among the last 455s produced, as 1976 was to be the swan song for the biggest Pontiac.
Our plan was to run the 455 on an engine dyno in bone-stock form--junk heads, stock cam, restricted iron intake, even the stock iron "log"-style exhaust manifolds, and then upgrade it step-by-step, retesting at every interval along the way.

And car engineers have wizened up to the fact that most of the time, you don't need a lot of horsepower to keep your car moving.
Even so, the gas engine in a gas-powered car has to be large enough to meet the power requirements of flooring it.
And a smaller engine means the components require less energy to operate, and since it isn't as heavy, you don't need extra energy when you accelerate or drive up a hill.
