Roadway noise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The intensity of roadway noise is governed by the following variables: traffic operations (speed, truck mix, age of vehicle fleet), roadway surface type, tire types, roadway geometrics, terrain, micrometeorology and the geometry of area structures.
The outcome was a compromise that involved substantial mitigation of noise pollution impacts.

 Boom-Car Noise Pollution
Each time a car stereo is played loudly from a vehicle parked in a residential area, the neighbors must feel similarly upset, angered especially by the perpetrator taking advantage of their goodwill, and taking advantage of their reluctance to complain.
Nancy Nadler, director of the Noise Center for the League of the Hard of Hearing, says the impact of noise on learning is well documented, pointing to a study conducted 25 years ago.
The following noises are, in the opinion of the Council of the City, objectionable or liable to disturb the quiet, peace, rest, enjoyment, comfort or convenience of individuals or the public.

 SIGNAL TO NOISE: Sept/Oct 2001
This is because the noise lies in the same low frequency bandwidth as the signal.
There’s a decade’s old myth in car audio that running the signal cables down one side of the car and the power wires down the other side of the car will prevent noise from coupling into the system.
All electrical accessories, including the car stereo components, use the car’s chassis as the ground return to the case of the alternator or the battery’s negative post.

Legal Authority of New York City to Ban Audible Car Alarms
Alternatively, a ban on car alarms could be construed as a regulation pursuant to the State Vehicle and Traffic Law as it would touch upon cars coming to the City from throughout the State.
The car alarm provision does not permit car alarms but rather provides that when they are used, that insurers shall take the effect they have into account in setting premiums.
Most importantly, however, the State has expressly permitted local regulation and enforcement of noise ordinances that address car alarms "over which the city or village has jurisdiction upon the owner of the motor vehicle" and provides that such notice shall be affixed to the window in a conspicuous place.

 SIGNAL TO NOISE: September/October 2000
This difference noise is directly proportional to the physical layout of the cables with respect to the noise currents flowing to and from the car’s accessories.
Given the fact that the car’s chassis is used as a ground return for all of the car’s electrical accessories, ground currents are flowing everywhere as soon as the engine is started.
The exact amount of increased noise depends on the level of ground currents flowing on the car’s chassis and the physical proximity of the connectors or transformers with respect to the noise.

Listen to what your car is telling you
OK, there have been a few production cars that told us the "door is ajar" and "the lights are on," but as a general rule cars don't speak.
However, a new noise may be a warning of mechanical problems.
To assure that you and your mechanic are speaking the same language, here is a list of some common "strange" car noise and their probable causes.

Noise from Car and Intruder Alarms
Car alarms can be activated when the car battery is running flat, in strong winds, even when cats land on them.
Noise made by burglar alarms is a frequent cause of complaint and can become a problem if it continues for a long time.
Where there has been a noise nuisance from an alarm on a number of occasions or where the alarm has rung for a long time, the Council has the power to require that a cut-out device is fitted.

 Car Wash Noise
As part of a proposed land use rezoning permit from residential to light commercial/retail, SFMI measured the existing 24 hour Ldn noise levels at the site and compared them with maximum noise levels contained national standards recommended.
Noise emissions from similar existing uses were found to be lower than the ambient noise already on the site.
To allow the station to implement automated car wash equipment, SFMI first compared the noise levels at the proposed site with the noise levels of a site where the equipment was already in operation.

Noise News for Week of April 27, 1997
Car owners who have an audible alarm in their car are supposed to register with their local precinct and leave the precinct telephone number on their dashboard so they can be notified if an alarm is sounding without stopping.
The recent noise impact study showed that most of the walls would be required to be 18 to 22 feet high, but a 30 foot wall would be needed on about 2,000 feet along the north side of the I-10 split at I-610.
Federal approval of noise barriers for the project is needed as a result of federal noise mitigation standards established a decade ago.

Car Noise In Speakers - MP3Car.com Forums
I've tried to solve it by getting a 40amp car nois isolator and connecting it directly to the battery as shown in the instructions and then running the output +12V to my amplifier, this did not solve the problem.
This eliminated the fuel pump ticking noise when the car is not running (but the fuel pump is runnig) but not the ticking noise when the engine is running.
My +12V runns down one side of the car to the amp and the RCA cables on the other side of the car, many have suggested this might be the cause, but it can't be as it's arranged correctly.

If it's not in the patch cables, the noise may be coming in through your antenna.
If you still have noise after unplugging the antenna, it may be coming in through the amp's main power cable.

The problem is this: Anytime i slow down I hear a strange noise, can't really classify it as squeaking or grinding, but somewhat like a "whirring" sound.
I've asked my mechanic to check it out, and the first time he did change the brake pads, that did not rectify the problem and since then he has told me 'nothing is wrong'.
It is strange that normally the noise goes away after/during wet weather.

Police had said that it was difficult to enforce noise limits on car stereos because the ordinance had defined a violation as any noise in excess of 80 decibels.
The article also notes that the noise issue is an example of the controversy that arises when the county tries to balance interests between longtime rural residents and the expanding suburban population.
Noise levels would be measured with a decibel sound meter installed in a police car.

The New York Times > New York Region > About New York: Car Noise, Car Alarm, Cacophony   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
This is because car alarms are designed not to blend in with other urban ambient noises: the truck rumbles, the yipping dogs, the no-longer-amusing domestic squabbles of others.
A car alarm is distinctive in its hellish medley of sounds, soundsthat invade your ears and eat at your soul.
The devices' many critics say that the alarms have minimal impact on car thefts (though the police disagree); that other antitheft devices are more effective and less intrusive on society; and that their murderous wails contribute greatly to that ranking quality-of-life complaint, noise.

Volkswagen Phat Noise Digital Car Audio System - Tech Review - European Car Magazine
For much of my driving career, car audio has been limited to whatever was in it when I bought it--quite often an AM/FM stereo, with a tape deck that required a folded matchbook cover to align and prop up the cartridge.
On paper Phat Noise fits all of my requirements: integrates into the stock head unit, is easy to install, has removable media and the ability to contain my music catalog.
If your car has not been equipped with a CD changer, Volkswagen's Web site has a 24-page downloadable document showing the exact installation procedure for each of its cars for which the Phat Noise is offered.

Crutchfield Advisor - Amplifiers - How to Suppress Noise
The threat of noise increases when you add an external amplifier, as the presence of more power- and signal-carrying cables translates into more potential intrusion points for radiated noise.
Cheap wiring tends to fall prey to noise intrusion in such a highly conductive environment (the cables you use at home won't keep out noise, because they're designed to function in a place that's not particularly conductive).
When running the power and signal cables through your car during installation, you should route them as far from each other as possible (at least 18 inches apart is ideal).

 Halfbakery: Noise-canceling car stereo
As the noise canelation technology is built into the stereo, it does not impact your radio listening pleasure (the signal is accounted for).
A great deal of the road and wind noise is voice band (1-4KHz) so if you intentionally avoid cancelling these frequencies, you have not accomplished much of your initial task.
It could still work (inside the car) to cancel the thumps coming from the car next to yours, though.

Modern cars are undoubtedly better value for money, better equipped, more reliable, more fun to drive, more fuel efficient, and are safer.
With the newest version, ICAAT, car manufacturers can discreetly improve and manage interior noise characteristics." Lotus has observed that over the last decade, while engine noise and wind noise have decreased, the efforts of manufacturers to make cars more attractive, safer, and more fun to drive have resulted in greater in-car noise.
The noise is not only an annoyance, but according to Swedish researchers the presence of a low frequency monotonous noise can make drivers feel drowsy, which is widely believed to be a factor in some accidents.

If that doesn't take care of the noise, then refer to our diagnostic flowchart to help track down the problem.
If the noise stops, then you know that the noise is originating from your receiver (or equalizer, if you're using one); if it doesn't stop, the noise is being introduced somewhere between the patch cables and your amplifier (double check your amp's ground).
The only "noise" you should have to listen to is your music.
