Topic: Carfree movement

Carfree movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Carfree movement is a coalition of people who believe that it is important to reduce both the number of cars in the world, and the usage of them.
Some carfree environments allow motorised vehicles for deliveries and emergency services; other such places use non-motorised alternatives for some or all of these purposes, which is preferable if feasible.
Some carfree environments have peripheral parking, and are thus still somewhat car-dependent; therefore solutions should be sought to avoid this.

Since becoming involved with the carfree movement in Europe, I have noted that although there is some participation by people with disabilities, it is usually as an afterthought, rather than as an integral part of the movement.
Moreover, the disability rights movement, which involves a significant alternative transport and mobility contingent, is generally unaware of the existence of the wider carfree movement.
The carfree movement certainly needs the backing of the powerful disability rights lobby, and the disability rights movement needs to realise the potential for affecting substantial improvements for people with disabilities by working with the carfree movement.

When, as result of this policy, the narrow streets of Athens were saturated, instead of promoting public transit, walking, and bicycle use (which require serious programmes), the use of motorcycles is encouraged through a series of privileges, in order to squeeze even more motorised traffic through the congested streets.

Post-modernists sometimes play at being radical by claiming that their architecture 'subverts' conventional 'paradigms', but they are just professors talking to other professors.

But unlike the post-modernists, New Urbanists are part of a powerful movement to reform society: hundreds of environmental groups across America support New Urbanism and smart growth, in order to fight suburban sprawl, to reduce air pollution, and to conserve energy.

So, the only mass movement I could ever be a part of, perhaps, would not be a mass movement of people to ecovillages, but a large increase in the number of economads, or hobos.
I do think this line of reasoning will be of interest to the larger carfree movement, because once one starts asking, "What would life be like without cars?" it is not a huge stretch to ask what life would be like without buildings, without computers, without bicycles, health insurance, rent, girl/boyfriends and so on.
If Earthaven had been from the start carfree, it would probably be in a different location, and might not be in the beautiful natural setting that it is, and it would not have appealed to those who founded it.
