In contrast, most carabids outside of this group have disjunct mesocoxal cavities, in which the the lateral wall of the cavity is formed in part by the mesepimeron (the sterna thus being disjunct on the lateral wall of the cavity).

Beetles within the Coleoptera family Carabidae are commonly known as ground beetles.
Carabidae is a large family, with more than 20,000 species worldwide (approximately 2,200 of which reside in North America).
Unlike most of the other species of Carabidae, which are nocturnal, the tiger beetles are active diurnal hunters, and often brightly coloured.

 AnZF 33(1), 1996
Isolation of populations of arctic Carabidae caused by Quaternary climatic oscillations did not lead to enhanced rates of extinction and speciation, as it did in the mammals.
The future response of Carabidae to climate change will probably be similar to that of the past with the exception that species extinction is expected to be higher because of the additional fragmentation of habitats caused by human activities.
The number of Carabidae in pitfalls was significantly lower in the dimethoate-treated plots than in the non-treated plots in 1993 and 1994.

FNZ43 - Carabidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) catalogue - Popular summary
The family Carabidae (ground beetles, including tiger beetles) is composed of 25 000 to 50 000 species worldwide, but probably at least twice as many taxa remain to be described.
However, the majority of native ground beetles are flightless and use running as their main means of locomotion.
When disturbed, Carabidae generally burrow into litter or soil, or run away.

The Rolex Awards: studying ground beetles in Nepal, P. Morvan
The bugs, collected along the length of the Himalayas, were to open to Morvan the doors of the world’s most prestigious laboratories, such as those of the British Museum, and the museums of Leningrad, Katmandu, Copenhagen, and Milan.
In 1991, after three years of work, he completed a 90-page manuscript on biogeographical speciation Morvan’s ambition is to provide a global and more logical view of the classification of the Coleoptera Carabidae, by retracing their evolution in relation to their bio-geographical environment.
For Morvan, the evolution of the Carabidae therefore follows closely the geological and climatic history of the planet.
