Carabiner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A carabiner or karabiner (colloquially: crab, krab, or 'biner) is a metal loop with a sprung or screwed gate.
Carabiners are widely used in sports requiring ropework, such climbing, caving ("Single Rope Technique"), canyoning, and sailing, and in industrial rope access work, such as construction or window cleaning.
Carabiners used in climbing tend to be lighter and faster to use than carabiners used in industry.

The Carabiner Wrap is a major improvement on the "Suicide" method because the rope wraps around the carabiner and generates substantially more friction, which supports much of the rappeller's weight.
The method only requires one carabiner, although a second one for attachment is desirable to keep the rope from rubbing against the seat harness.
There has been quite a bit of discussion of the carabiner orientation, with the conclusion sometimes being "gate up and in." The photo shows a carabiner with the open end of the gate up and the hinge at the bottom.

The two vertical carabiners should be oval carabiner set with the gates up and opposite.
D-shaped carabiners can be used, but will bind if the gates are opposite, so they should be rigged with the gates on the same side and opposed.
The rappeller should attach the assembly to the seat harness with a maillon (preferred), one or two locking carabiners (an HMS carabiner is easiest), or two non-locking carabiners.

Carabiner failures in Powered Paragliding are not very common.
It means that the triangular biner could still resist 4,4 G. I also considered that a carabiner failure would not happen in an instant and put a very high load on the safety system.
The carabiner would likely crack, break and bend out while the load would gradually be taken over by the back-up system.

Gates are either the same as the body of the carabiner or are made of stiff wire - the latter are a bit lighter in weight and offer a larger opening compared to equivalent conventional carabiners but cannot hold the same weight.

Rigging the proper amount of friction on a rappel or belay device can be tricky, especially when you have changing conditions, such as in a guiding situation.
In the past, I have dealt with this by rigging with a second carabiner, an extra bight on the rope, a biner on the leg loop, or a muenter combination.
First, Petzl's technical data sheet says you can only use it with devices where the rope is not in direct contact with the carabiner, such as a rack, a figure 8, or a stop.
