  Caradhras - Definition, explanation
Tolkien's Middle-earth, Caradhras, also called the Redhorn (the literal English translation of the Sindarin name), is one of the mightiest peaks in the Misty Mountains.
The Redhorn Pass attempted by the Nine Walkers on their quest for Mount Doom lay beneath its slopes, linking the former Noldorin realm of Eregion in the west to the Dimrill Dale and hence the Vale of Anduin in the east.
Caradhras (in Khuzdul, the language of the Dwarves, Baranzibar) was one of the Mountains of Moria, the three mountains which the great Dwarf palace of Khazad-dûm was built under.

Misty Mountains - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Their most important peaks are Caradhras, Carn Dûm, Celebdil, Fanuidhol, Mount Gundabad and Methedras.
The northernmost peak of the Misty Mountains was Mount Gundabad, where according to legend Durin (eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves) awoke, though it was now an abode of Orcs.
The three peaks that were part of Khazad-dûm were Caradhras (Redhorn), Celebdil (Silvertine) and Fanuidhol (Cloudyhead).

The Caradhras is one of the three mountains of Moria, which is Sindarin for "Redhorn" because it consists of dull red rocks.
Between the Caradhras and the Celebil (Sindarin for: Silvertine) lies the Redhorn Gate, which the Fellowship tried to pass to get to the Dimrill Dale.
Deep under the the Caradhras the Dwarves found the only mithril-deposit of Middle-Earth and in their greed freed the last living Balrog.

Kendall's mind was allowed the time to wander, her thoughts continually turning back to Legolas and his care for her on Caradhras.

Caradhras and the Mountains of Moria (partially conjectural)
Tolkien adopts a consistent transliteration scheme for these Elvish characters: he uses 'th' to refer exclusively to the voiceless sound, and 'dh' to the voiced.
'Caradhras' is probably the most prominent use of this 'dh' sound, but it does occur fairly frequently in other names: Aredhel, Maedhros and Caras Galadhon are three important examples.

Given the references that are made, I have always thought that Caradhras itself was home to some manner of evil spirit that Sauron had stirred up against the fellowship.
Since we head for Caradhras, dwarven culture is to the fore, from the "jaw-cracker" language to the superstition, reverence and awe of the mountains.
Tolkien again uses the ambiguous "as if" voice, this time in referring to Caradhras' acknowledging their defeat by stopping the storm, so we don't know for sure, but I reckon it's supposed to be an actual ill will.

1:29 -...the third cue in the track which reprises the music for Caradhras as Arwen makes her way across the Misty Mountains with the surviving dwarfs from the Hobbit, clutching a silmaril at her breast.
The surprising use of the Caradhras theme here is probably not so surprising - quite possibly this theme is a general motif for mountain scenes and isn't restricted to the Misty Mountains.
If the scene is the one from the preview where Smeagol is tempted by the Ring, then it creates a nice parallel to the similar scene from FOTR where Frodo slips in the Misty Mountains - leading to Boromir's temptation by the Ring.

Caradhras: One of the major themes is that there are some things older and more powerful than Elves, Dwarves, Men, Wizards...anybody.
The reason they can't get over Caradhras is not because Saruman wants to force them into coming by Moria or the Gap of Rohan, it's because Caradhras itself doesn't want them to pass.
They'd built Saruman up as enough of a threat without having him be able to control what Caradhras does.

In the Dwarvish language, Caradhras was called Barazinbar, and under it was the mithril vein, and the place where the Balrog hid.
Still, it does seem likely that the evil will of the Balrog was at work in creating the association of Caradhras with cruel weather.

"Caradhras the Cruel" is every bit as harsh and forbidding as the rugged mountain of the story (the lyrics are the voice of the giant stone mass itself taunting the heroes).
Most songs exhibit the band's excellent musicianship, with perhaps the single exception being "Caradhras the Cruel" which suffers from an unfortunate vocal track meant to be the voice of the Mountian.
The best tracks on this album include "Journey's Thought", which follows the musings of Frodo while on his quest, and "Lothlorien", which truly captures the spirit of that beautiful, timeless place.
