Caradoc Evans was born into the Welsh-speaking farming culture of Carmarthenshire in West Wales, and was brought up in the village of Rhydlewis in neighbouring Cardiganshire.
A linguistic tension between English as the language of the modern and Welsh as the language of agricultural tradition was at the heart of much of his writing.
Leaving school at the standard age of fourteen, Caradoc was apprenticed to his uncle, a draper in the county town of Carmarthen.
