Catanduanes was known as an early center of Shipbuilding during the early Spanish period and it is believed that its name is derived from the Catandungan River, along whose banks tando trees used extensively for shipbuilding were found.
In 1755, Catanduanes was overran by the raiders who pillaged and burned the towns of Virac and Calolbon, Luyang Cave, in San Antonio, is the mass grave of islanders who were massacred in that raid.
Catanduanes is a Kidney-shaped island at the eastern-most seaboard of the Philippines.

Catanduanes, (opposite the Bicol Region), is bounded by the Maqueda Channel on the west, the Pacific Ocean on the north and east, and the Lagonoy Gulf and Cabugao Bay on the south.
The Island, with a land area of 1,511.5 square kilometers and a population of 215,356 in 2000, is composed of 11 towns, with Virac as the capital.
Diego de Herrera with nine Augustinians sailed from Acapulco to the Philippines aboard the galleon, "Espiritu Santo." Although it was reported that the galleon was shipwrecked near the coast of Catanduanes in April 1576, the others claimed that the disaster was caused by bad weather and all the crewmembers perished.

On Friday the house of a certain Major Alberto, commandant of the Catanduanes State College ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps), was allegedly attacked by the NPA, but the commandant was not at home during the attack.

At least 10 fishermen were reported missing in the provinces of Camarines Norte, Albay and Catanduanes.
Still another unidentified fisherman was reported missing since Monday from Caramoran, Catanduanes, the OCD said.
At least 550 were stranded at the port in Tabaco, Albay, 400 in Masbate and 30 in Virac, Catanduanes.

The municipality of Caramoran is located in the northern part of the island province of Catanduanes, more or less 87 kilometers from the capital town of Virac.
If you are in Tabaco, Albay you can reach the place by taking a small passenger/cargo motorboat direct to Caramoran or if you like, the big motor vehicle like the M/V Eugenia and Starferry or the fast sea vessel like the M/V Calixta in going to San Andres (Calolbon).
Caramoran is bounded on the north by the Municipality of Pandan, on the east by the Municipality of Viga, Panganiban and Bagamanoc, on the south by the Municipality of San Andres and Virac, on the West by Maqueda Channel.

According to DPWH Catanduanes district engineer Ignacio Odiaman, the San Miguel-Viga-Panganiban-Bagamanoc national road was finally cleared for traffic last Saturday (Dec. 4), with the backfilling of approaches and temporary reinstallation of a washed-out span at the vital Pagsangahan detour bridge.
This development comes as good news to transport operators who had suspended operation since Nov. 15 due to the massive landslides that blocked the roads as a result of typhoon “Unding.” Commuters to Pandan and Caramoran had the more difficult time as they were forced to take a motorboat ride along the island’s western coast.
On the other hand, still impassable is the Panganiban-Sabloyon (Caramoran) road due to numerous landslides and scoured bridge approaches in six river crossings.

ABOUT 5,000 board feet of illegally cut lumber in Catanduanes were seized in a series of operations conducted by a joint team of policemen and personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
In a report to Camp Crame, PNP Region 5 Chief Restituto Mosqueda said his men and DENR personnel assigned in Catanduanes raided several warehouses located in the town of Caramoran and San Andres last December 8 and confiscated from there undocumented 3,198 board feet of mahogany lumber and 263 board feet of narra.
All the confiscated lumber and cutting equipment were placed under the custody of the DENR in Virac, Catanduanes for proper disposition.

Heavy rains brought by Unding triggered flooding and landslides in the island-province of Catanduanes and left 2,758 passengers stranded in bus terminals and seaports across Bicol, according to the Office of the Civil Defense.
OCD Bicol regional director Arnel Capili said a report from the Catanduanes Engineering District Office to the Department of Public Works and Highways regional office here said the approaches to the Pagsangahan Bridge in San Miguel and the San Vicente Bridge in Gigmoto Catanduanes were washed out by flood waters.
The Catanduanes Disaster Coordinating Council also reported that floods rendered the Paruroc Spillway in San Andres, Catanduanes impassable to all types of vehicles while all river crossings were also flooded.

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay, Philippines -- (UPDATE) Several flooded areas and landslides were reported in Catanduanes as torrential rains brought by tropical storm “Unding” (international codename: Muifa) battered the island-province on Tuesday.
Reports reaching the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) here said landslides occurred in Barangay Barihay in Caramoran town and Barangay Ginitligan in Gigmoto, but there were no reported casualties from the storm.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Catanduanes office also reported heavy flooding caused by water spillout in San Andres town, while Barangays Oga and Camburo in Pandan were partially flooded.

In the late 1950s, when it was characterised as "a somewhat rare duck" (Meyer de Schauensee 1957), the species was found in large feeding flocks (up to 100) in freshwater bodies in southern Negros, but very few birds were present in the early 1970s (Alcala and Carumbana 1975).
On Catanduanes in 1971 the Philippine Duck gathered "in large numbers" to feed (Gonzales 1983).
Food consists of "fish, shells, seeds, and the shoots of young plants", and at Caramoran on Catanduanes in 1971 farmers complained that birds caused considerable damage to newly sown fields and sprouting crops (Gonzales 1983); also insects and rice (Gonzales and Rees 1988).
