 Holiday in Irish Horse-Drawn caravan
Today's `Travelling People' or 'Travellers', as they are now called, inhabit modern trailer caravans pulled by vans or lorries and very seldom live in horse-drawn caravans.
The caravan is designed to be as comfortable and as compact as possible - yet light enough for one horse to pull.
A horse-drawn caravan is about 5 metres long (about 7 metres with horse yoked), over 2 metres wide and weighs maximum 750 Kg.

According to Don Aitken, of the Travellers' Aid Trust, new recruits are either middle-class, educated types who have come to view that this is the best way of life, or working-class kids whose lives in the city offer less freedom than does vagrant poverty on the road.
A traveller cannot simply rent a weed-covered, set-aside field from a farmer for a couple of weeks: the farmer will be charged with running an unlicensed caravan site.

 [1995] 3 Web JCLI
Following on from this decision it appears that many Councils will not be calculating 'new age travellers' in their twice yearly count of Gypsy caravans to the Department of the Environment.
The Government may well hope that in attempting to make the travelling lifestyle impossible and encouraging Gypsies to adopt settled accommodation, they will be able to prevent the growth of the modern traveller movement and substantially reduce the number of existing travellers.
The importance of this travelling tradition, which clearly distinguishes Gypsies from modern travelling groups, was unfortunately overlooked in the Caravan Sites Act 1968.

News - Seaford Today: News, Sport, Jobs, Property, Cars, Entertainments & More
BONFIRE societies in Sussex breathed a sigh of relief this week following the news that 12 members of Firle Bonfire Society are not to be prosecuted over their controversial effigy of a travellers' caravan.
As well as focussing national attention on the traditions of Bonfire in Sussex, the case brought under closer scrutiny the problems arising from travellers setting up camp in inappropriate areas, and the laborious procedures required to move them on.
There was a general view among most bonfire societies in the county that Firle's effigy - prompted by an unwanted visitation by travellers last year - had gone too far, but that prosecution was unwarranted.
