Carbon copy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
, was originally the technique of using carbon paper to produce several copies of paper documents.
On an old-fashioned typewriter, this would be done by placing the carbon paper between two sheets of paper in the machine, so that whatever was typed on the front sheet was copied onto the second sheet.
However, the term "carbon copy" has found renewed use with the growth of the Internet, even though its original meaning does not apply.

"Carbon Copy" came late in Segal´s incredibly successful run of comedies through the 1970´s and early 80´s that included hits such as "The Duchess and the Dirty Water Fox, "A Touch of Class","Who is killing the Great Chefs of Europe", and "Fun with Dick and Jane".

Interview with Mike Bombich, Author of Carbon Copy Cloner
A compressed disk image must be read-only, therefore, you must first create a read-write disk image, copy everything to it, then convert the disk image to read-only-compressed.
This takes up a lot more space during the backup process than the final image takes, and many people would be confused if they run out of space on the target drive (and it takes a lot more time, especially on slower machines).
