Carbon fibre -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Carbon fibre (Considered the most highly evolved dicotyledonous plants, characterized by florets arranged in dense heads that resemble single flowers) composite is a strong, light and very expensive material.
Technically the term "carbon fibre" is used to refer to (An abundant nonmetallic tetravalent element occurring in three allotropic forms: amorphous carbon and graphite and diamond; occurs in all organic compounds) carbon filament thread, or to felt or woven cloth made from carbon filaments.
Carbon fibre cloth can also be used in air (The act of changing a fluid by passing it through a filter) filtration.

Carbon fibre is naturally a glossy fl, but recently colored carbon fibre has become available.
To make the roof of the BMW M3 CSL, 5 layers of carbon fibre cloth are placed in an 1,800 ton press, where epoxy is resin transfer moulded and heat-cured in a robot-automated process.

 carbon fibre microelectrodes
Carbon fibre electrodes were developed in the late 1970's as a means of combining the good extracellular recording qualities of tungsten-type electrodes together with iontophoretic barrels in one easy-to-assemble multibarrel assembly.
Carbon fibres are available commercially in "tow"s of many thousands of fibres of 7-8 m diameter for a very low price.
Carbon fibre electrodes are not as stiff as tungsten electrodes because the carbon has a uniform diameter instead of a taper back from the tip.

The material is produced by layering sheets of carbon fibre cloth into a mould in the shape of the final product.
Reinforced carbon-carbon (RCC) consists of carbon fibre-reinforced graphite, and is used structurally in high-temperature applications, such as the nose cone and leading edges of the space shuttle.
Carbon fiber is used extensively in racing, most especially in Formula One and Indycar racing.

Building Carbon Dinghy Masts at Home
Basically a carbon mast tends to consist of a substantial layer of unidirectional fibres sandwiched between two layers of woven carbon which are primarily there to keep the unidirectional carbon in column and prevent buckling and peeling.
Carbon rigs tend to be at least 20% stiffer than the equivalent section in alloy.
Higher grades or carbon could certainly reduce the size and weight - Dave Roe has calculated that he could make a 1.5 inch diameter mast that would be around 70% of the weight of the current ones, but that the material cost would be something like three times greater...

There is no doubt that the pioneers in carbon fibre mast construction are the cottage industry-style boatbuilders and mast makers who are passionate about their work.
The 12,000 strands of carbon on each of the four bobbin spools are pre-pregnated and fed on to the rotating mandril at the correct tension and angle.
While carbon fibre hasn't quite taken over the mast construction market yet because they are still approximately 2.5 times the cost of alloy masts, there is no doubt the continuous development and increasing competition will result in lower prices, possibly as low as just one and a half times the cost of an alloy mast!

Carbonworks was approached by one of their clients to design and supervise the construction of carbon fibre yacht mast, turret and boom components for a fast-cruising 49 foot (15 metre) catamaran being built on the Gold Coast in Australia.
The turret is 6m long, approximately 230mm in diameter, and made from prepreg carbon fibre.
LUSAS Composite was used to determine if these holes contributed to premature buckling, and to assess how much unidirectional carbon fibre was needed each side of the holes to act as a bypass for the loadpath.

 Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composite Car
The project objective was to design and manufacture a carbon fibre composite structure for the ASCC at minimum weight, while providing greater stiffness in all aspects than for current steel bodies.

CARBON FIBRE TECHNOLOGIES (CFT) LTD. is one of those companies that make up the backbone of the British motorsport industry.
All it needed was a heated factory and a staff skilled in the use of a paintbrush and roller.
Quality was variable, and it was not until carbon fibre began to be used as a true engineering material in monocoques etc., in the late 1980s, that the composite industry started to mature into one of the major players in motorsport engineering.

Higher performance yachts would use tapered aluminium masts, constructed by removing a triangular strip of aluminium along the length of the mast and then closing and welding the gap.
From the mid 1990s racing yachts introduced the use of carbon fibre and other composite materials to construct masts with even better strength to weight ratios.
Carbon fibre masts could also be constructed with more precisely engineered aerodynamic profiles.

The presence of the forks usually reduces bottom bracket deflection; however in oversize carbon frames fitted with carbon forks this increase is very small.
The type of fork influences the bottom bracket deflection and in the case of the titanium frame the aerodynamic carbon forks gave more deflection than the lighter conventional steel forks.
The oversize aluminium frame (GT) was not as stiff as the bonded Alan frame that used much smaller tube sections.
