  Carbonado - Home
Carbonado is an extensible, high performance persistence abstraction layer for Java applications, providing a relational view to the underlying persistence technology.
Carbonado is able to achieve high performance by imposing very low overhead when accessing the actual storage.
Carbonado has a rule-based optimizer mainly because it is easier to write.

  Carbonado - LoveToKnow 1911
CARBONADO, a name given in Brazil to a dark massive form of impure diamond, known also as "carbonate" and in trade simply as carbon.
Generally it is found in small masses of irregular polyhedral form, fl, brown or dark-grey in colour, with a dull resinoid lustre; and breaking with a granular fracture, paler in colour, and in some cases much resembling that of fine-grained steel.
The largest piece of carbonado ever recorded was found in Bahia in 1895, and weighed 3150 carats.

Carbonado   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Carbonado is imperfectly crystallised diamond, usually fl or grey, it is usually ground or crushed to use as abrasive or other industrial diamond use.
It is one of the polymorphic forms of carbon, not as Michael Mepham described it in a clue for the Daily Telegraph General Knowledge Crossword (Saturday 18th August 2006) as "Carbon isotope that is known as carbonado, used in industry and jewellery".
An isotope is an atom of the same element, in this case carbon, with a different atomic weight, due to the presence of a different number of neutrons in its nucleus.

Brazil diamond deposits, geology, exploration, mining, use - Part X
By treating finely powdered carbonado with aqua regia a portion of the mineral matter constituting the ash may be dissolved out, the solution being found to contain iron and a little calcium, but no aluminum.
The hardness of carbonado not only equals that of diamond, but may even exceed it, and its hardness is supposed to be greater the less distinctly it is crystalline.
Carbonado cannot therefore be cut by ordinary diamond powder, or at least only with extreme difficulty; it forms a valuable cutting material for ordinary diamonds, and large quantities are used as a grinding material for this and other purposes, which require exceptionally hard material.

Carbonado - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Carbonado is a natural polycrystalline diamond found in alluvial deposits in the Central African Republic and Brazil.
Additionally, carbonado exhibits strong luminescence (photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence) induced by nitrogen and by vacancies existing in the crystal lattice.
First, if carbonado were formed by phase transformation of organic graphite inside the Earth, carbonado would be found all over the world.

Coined by the Portuguese in Brazil in the mid 18th century, carbonado is derived from its visual similarity to porous charcoal.
The authors find that the presence of hydrogen in carbonado is consistent with an origin in a hydrogen-rich interstellar media.
And nitrogen substitution points to the fact that carbonado did not undergo the millions of years of slow cooling, at high pressures, that conventional diamonds experience in the deep Earth.

 Diamond Crystals and Carbonado
The carbonado surface is quite complex: the dark areas in the BSE image are much as one might expect, since carbon does not yield electrons of sufficient energy to be detected by this equipment.
The close links between carbonado from Brazil and the Central African Republic does not preclude impact origin for the diamond, although that remains contentious: carbonado lacks the lonsdaleite form of diamond found in impact structures, and verified impact diamonds are far smaller.
Carbonados are some of the largest diamonds, but are fl and very porous, unlike the non-porous, microcrystalline diamond aggregates found in kimberlites (stewartite, framesite).

Carbonado or "fl" diamonds, are the exotic diamonds found in Brazil and the Central African Republic.

Additionally, adding to the evidence for an extra-terrestrial origin, carbonado diamonds have never been reported among any of the other 600 tons of "conventional" diamonds mined, sorted, graded, traded, cut, and polished in the last century.

News in Science - Black diamonds born in space - 22/01/2007
Finding out how carbonado diamonds are created would not only help geologists search for more, but help diamond makers figure out how to synthesise the useful gems, Haggarty says.
For one thing, carbonado diamonds are very porous - a strange thing for a mineral thought to have formed under extreme pressures deep in the Earth.
One possible explanation is that the carbonado diamonds are a chunk of a star that exploded long before the formation of the Sun.
