The carborundum thus produced is crystalline, greenish, bluish or brownish in color, sometimes opaque, but often translucent, resisting the action of even the strongest acids, and the action of air or of sulphur at high temperatures.
In hardness it nearly equals the diamond, and it is used for tool-grinding in the form of vitrified wheels (mixed with powdered porcelain and iron, pressed into shape and fired in a kiln).

The carborundum detector is very simple in construction, and may consists simply of a small carborundum crystal held between two brass springs.
Supposing a crystal of carborundum be joined in series with a battery and galvanometer, and the current noted, and the poles of the battery reversed and the current again noted, it will be found that the two currents differ greatly altrough the electro-motive force of the battery has remained unaltered.
This shows that for currents in one direction carborundum has a very high resistance and is practically an insulator, but for currents in the reverse direction it is comparatively a good conductor.

The carborundum used (insofar as sizes are concerned see abrasives) can be either spread on the plate, incorporated in synthetic resin or vinyl glue, or mixed with acrylic paints for colour.
Another way of putting carborundum onto the plate is to mix it with a special ink and then apply it onto the relevant parts of a duraluminium plated plate (the layer of duraluminium being about 2 microns thick).
This application is done indirectly as the carborundum is first dusted onto an ink made up of a very viscous linseed oil, a few drops of trichloroethytene and some colour (such as the ink used in felt tip pens).
