  Carburettor - Patent 4256066
According to the invention, a carburettor having a conduit comprising a device with surfaces distributed in the transverse section of the said conduit, is essentially characterized in that the said device with surfaces is located in the said conduit between the fuel-injection device and the butterfly throttle-valve, that is to say upstream of this latter.
As previously indicated, this carburettor may advantageously comprise surfaces disposed on the upstream side of the butterfly valve with two shutters, but if necessary, and depending on the cases of utilization, it could either comprise such surfaces on the downstream side of the butterfly valve, or it may even dispense with these surfaces.
1 and 2, but the carburettor is in this case of the constant-depression type in which a conical needle 40 controls the admission of fuel into the conduit, indicated by 11' and this is effected in known manner in dependence on the depression existing in the said conduit 11' and acting on a piston 41.

 GASCo Paper on Carburettor Icing
The certification requirements for carburettor heat systems for single engined GA aircraft are limited, the principal requirement under JAR 23.1093 (a)(3) being simply that at 60% maximum continuous power and in stated ambient conditions there is a heat rise of 56 degrees C (100 F).
Application of carburettor heat is made by manual operation of a knob or switch and, typically, pilots of aeroplanes are trained to apply carburettor heat for at least 10 seconds at about five minute intervals in the cruise.
We have encountered anecdotal objections that the Iceman carburettor probe is prone to becoming fouled with oil or other matter, causing false alarms, although the device includes a zeroing facility that is intended to cope with partial fouling of the probe.

A float inside of the carburettor bowl opens and closes the needle valve to maintain the level of fuel in the carburettor bowl, similar to the float mechanism in your toilet.
The bottom of the carburettor is bolted to the top of the Intake Manifold, a metal tube which splits right and left and carries the fuel/air mixture from the carburettor down to the sides of the engine, where it attaches to the Cylinder Heads on either side.
On the side of the carburettor body is a barrel-shaped object, a little larger a pen-light battery, with a fl wire connected to the outer end.

A carburettor icing-probability chart showed that serious icing at descent power was to be expected at such a humidity level.
Application of carburettor heat for a short time will melt any ice, and when the carburettor heat is turned off again, you will see an increase in engine power for the same throttle setting.
Carburettor icing can sneak up on you when you are cruising along.

Due to the way that barrel carburettors work the, gap is usually toward the corner of the carburettor body as shown in the image to the left.
Some carburettors are also fitted with a 'third needle', which isn't a needle at all, it is an adjuster that allows for the position of the jet assembly to be altered in relation to the flow of air through the carburettor.

Ultrasonic carburettor cleaning for all motorcycle carburettors.
A carburettor contains as many as 4 different fuelling circuits within each carburettor and to obtain seamless fuelling over the entire engine operating range, it is important that all of the systems work as designed.
Whether carburettors have problems or not, their operational efficiency depends to a large extent on their being in optimum condition and this is understood by those who require optimum peformance from their machines.
If your carburettors are giving trouble, you may consider that replacement with a secondhand set would be preferable to cleaning.

It is very important that the carburettor supplies a fuel-air mixture which remains constant during the changes in throttle opening and under the different load conditions of the motorcycle engine.
In the tapered-needle type carburettor, the choke size is the diameter of the section immediately upstream or downstream of the throttle valve and its size is cast on the nameplate together with the model type of carburettor eg PHBE 36BS signifies a 36 mm venturi carburettor.

Carburetor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The carburetor, carburettor, or carburetter (see spelling differences), also called carb (in North America) or carbie (chiefly in Australia) for short, is a device that blends air and fuel for an internal combustion engine.
In Europe, the sidedraft carburettors replaced downdraft as free space in the engine bay decreased and the use of the SU-type carburetor (and similar units from other manufacturers) increased.
The UK location of the SU and Zenith-Stromberg companies helped these carburettors rise to a position of domination in the UK car market, though such carburetors were also very widely used on Volvos and other non-UK makes.

With use, the chain of cables, rods and linkages that connect the throttle to the carburettors will stretch and change their tolerances which results in the carburettor sliders or butterflies operating at slightly different times from one another.
This means that not only is there the potential for errors due to the moving parts of each gauge, it is very difficult to ensure that each gauge gives exactly the same reading on a given amount of vacuum, due to the variances in manufacturing tolerances, friction differences, volumes of mercury or tension of springs.
Carburettor balance, or the synchronisation, is essential for the efficiency and longevity of your engine.

If the jets are mispositioned in the carburettor and in this case the fault will be accompanied, with erractic running of the engine, then the fault could be corrected by the mechanic by repositioning the jets.
