As shown in Table 1, skeletal muscle involvement from cervical carcinoma is very rare, and usually documented in the context of an already far advanced stage tumor or metastatic disease [6-8], or in severely immunocompromised patients, as occurs in patients with AIDS [3,4].

Carcinoma in situ is particularly known to precede invasive cervical cancer in most cases.
However, the carcinoma in situ lesion may regress after the initial diagnosis and such occurrence was reported in 17 (25%) of 67 patients who were followed up for at least 3 years.
Progression to invasive carcinoma becomes established and is considered irreversible once the malignant process extends through the basement membrane and invasion of the cervical stroma occurs.

They concluded that the molecular changes present in endocrine tumours of the cervix were quite distinct and incorporated those present in the neuroendocrine tumours of the lung (TP53 mutations and 9p 21 deletions) with those detected in squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix (high risk HPV sequences and localised 3p deletions).
Small cell carcinoma of the cervix has the capacity to metastasise early and widely by both lymphatic and haematogenous routes and involvement of regional and distant lymph nodes, lung, bone and brain and liver is common.
In another prospective study in small cell carcinoma of the cervix reported by Morris, et al (1992) ten patients with clinical stage 1 or 2 small cell carcinoma of the cervix were treated with cisplatin, doxorubicin and etoposide plus or minus irradiation.

Dr. Koop - Cervical Cancer- Health Encyclopedia and Reference
Since 1940, there has been a steady decrease in the incidence of carcinoma of the cervix because most women with no symptoms are screened with cervical and vaginal Pap smears.
Most researches believe that the human papilloma virus (HPV) is a strong cofactor in the development of pre-invasive and invasive carcinomas of the cervix, as well as pre-invasive and invasive squamous cell cancer of the vagina and vulva.
Patients whose cancer has invaded only the cervix and those whose disease has extended into the tissues next to the cervix or to the upper vagina can be treated effectively with either surgery or radiation therapy.

Frederick R. Jelovsek MD "I was recently diagnosed with carcinoma in situ or severe dysplasia of the cervix, I had a LEEP procedure and recently had a normal pap test.
Rates of progression of carcinoma in situ of the cervix to frankly invasive cancer range from about 22% to 60% when followed more than 10 years (3, 4).
After the cervix is removed, dysplasia changes can take place at the end of the vagina where the cervix used to be (5, 6, 7) but the incidence of invasive cancer of the vagina after hysterectomy is only about 1% if NO follow up Paps take place.

As with radical surgery, the goal of radiation treatment is to sterilize disease in the cervix, paracervical tissues, and regional lymph nodes in the pelvis.

invasion by cervical carcinoma are depicted with CT as loss of definition of the cervical contours accompanied with masslike soft tissue that replaces the parametrial fat on the right and that extends into the anterior and right-sided rectal walls.

Carcinoma of the cervix was once the most common cause of cancer death in women, but over the past 30 years, the mortality rate has decreased by 50% due to widespread screening with the Pap smear.
Carcinoma in situ demonstrates cytologic evidence of neoplasia without invasion through the basement membrane, can persist unchanged for 10 to 20 years, but eventually progresses to invasive carcinoma.
Approximately 80% of invasive cervix cancers are squamous cell tumors, 10 to 15% are adenocarcinomas, 2 to 5% are adenosquamous with epithelial and glandular structures, and 1 to 2% are clear cell mesonephric tumors.

The intravenous injection of contrast material is particularly useful in increasing the conspicuity of the cervical tumor and in facilitating the evaluation of the parametria and the pelvic sidewalls.
Cervical carcinoma has a long T1 and a long T2 that render it relatively hyperintense on proton density–weighted and T2-weighted images (see Images 18-21), on which the SI of the tumor is approximately similar to that of the endometrium.

Carcinoma of the cervix continues to occur, although the incidence is clearly decreasing; what we are talking about are predominantly squamous cell carcinomas which are the most common variety, accounting for approximately 80% of all cervical cancers, adenocarcinoma represents approximately 20%, other cell types are much less common.
At the present time in the United States, approximately one-half of the cases of invasive carcinoma of the cervix are advanced at the time of diagnosis.
Let’s move on to the larger carcinomas of the cervix, stage IB and stage IIA.
