The active chemical, dubbed "Cardamine" did not cause any mental dependency, but the physiological changes caused by the chemical meant that withdrawal was invariably fatal.
Effectively trapped on an inhospitable pit of a planet, the Outcasts were bitter and jealous of the colonists of the successful colony ships, and their nice, safe, hospitable systems and rich resources.
Cardamine was refined into a powerful drug and distributed throughout the houses by Outcast agents, operating through local criminal groups.

DESCRIPTION: Cardamines are hardy annuals or perennials with the common names of Bitter Cress, Cuckoo Plant and Lady's Smock.
They are found wild in the mountain woodlands of west and central Europe.
Cuttings may also be taken and inserted in sandy soil in a cold frame.
The Cardaminegenus can be difficult to define and this species is no exception.
Similar Species: This species sometimes hybridizes with the very similar Bulbous Bittercress (Cardamine bulbosa) which blooms a couple of weeks later, has white flowers (rarely pink), green sepals turning yellow, is taller and less hairy.
From a distance the flowers are very like Cut-leaved Toothwort, Cardamine laciniata which is blooming at the same time and much more common in our area.

Virions isometric; not enveloped; 30 nm in diameter.
The viral RNA shows significant sequence homology with those of turnip crinkle and carnation mottle viruses but not with those of cymbidium ringspot, tomato bushy stunt, turnip yellow mosaic and southern bean mosaic viruses.
All specimens of Cardamine cordifolia at UNM appear to be var.
Considering that there is some variation in vestiture within Cardamine cordifolia even in New Mexico, and in other mustard species for that matter, it may be that var.
