I found, among others: "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardan_grille" which said: "In cryptography, a Cardan grille (introduced by Renaissance mathematician Gerolamo Cardano, also known as Jerome Cardan, in 1550) is an important tool in the reading of a message obfuscated through steganography.

The solution is possible only when the same grill >is used many times and the text is long enough." > > ---- > >It is my impression that Rugg is not using the true Cardan grill, since he is just juggling >pre-, mid- a suffixes, not individual letters.
It also brings for us very difficult point to >overcome: using of the true Cardan grill will provide the text which is 75 percent >"gibberish"!
The author of the VM could know that and use >different grill for each page - the key being hidden in the picture on the same page.

Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642) was reputed to be fond of the Cardan grille and to have used it in both private and diplomatic correspondence.
Although the original Cardan grilles were little used by the end of the 17th century, they still appeared occasionally in the form of masked letters and as literary curiosities.
The turning grille reappeared in a more sophisticated form at the end of the 19th century; but, by this time, any connection with Cardano was in name alone.

  Grille (cryptography) at AllExperts
In the history of cryptography, a grille cipher was a technique for encrypting a plaintext by writing it onto a sheet of paper through a pierced sheet (of paper or cardboard or similar).
Grille ciphers are also useful device for transposing Chinese characters, and avoid the transliteration of the words into alphabetic or syllabitic charactes to which other ciphers (for expample, {{substitution cipher}}s) can be applied.
As in the case of letters/numbers in a random grid, obtaining the grille itself is a chief goal of the attacker.

A promising possibility was the Cardan grille, which was introduced by Italian mathematician Girolamo Cardano in 1550.
You can align the grille to the upper left corner of the table to create the first word of Voynichese and then move it three columns to the right to make the next word.
This finding indicates that if the Cardan grille was indeed used to make the Voynich manuscript, the author was probably creating cleverly designed nonsense rather than a ciphertext.

 My Solution
The most obvious way of using the grille is simply to move it left to right across each row in turn, three columns at a time, starting at the top of the table.
It is therefore necessary to vary how the grille is moved, to break up the sequences.
There are numerous ways of doing this, such as moving the grille up or down a random number of rows each time it is moved across, or moving it diagonally across the table.

He was born in Pavia, Italy, the illegitimate child of a mathematically gifted lawyer who was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci.
Cardano invented several mechanical devices including the combination lock, the gimbal consisting of three concentric rings allowing a supported compass or gyroscope to rotate freely, and the Cardan shaft with universal joints, which allows to transmit rotary motion at various angles and is used in vehicles to this day.
He made several contributions to hydrodynamics and held that perpetual motion is impossible, except in celestial bodies.

 Voynich manuscript a hoax
But this complexity could have been produced easily, Rugg demonstrates, with an encryption device invented around 1550 called a Cardan grille.
To prove that the manuscript is a hoax, one would need to produce entire sections using this technique, says Pelling.
Tweaking the grilles and tables should make this possible, reckons Rugg.
