The Cardassians soon got over this shock, and just over a year later, they were almost successful in forcing Starfleet to leave Bajor by helping a Bajoran extremist group oust the Provisional Government from Power, which would have left Bajor wide open for the Cardassians to reclaim the system - and the Wormhole.
