The Army Medal of Honor was first awarded to Private Jacob Parrott during the American Civil War and was last officially awarded on September 23, 2005 to Corporal Tibor Rubin, a concentration camp survivor during the Second World War, for actions that occurred during the Korean War in 1950-1953.
Before the posthumous awarding of the Medal of Honor in 2005 to Paul R. Smith, the medal was last awarded during the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993, when MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shughart lost their lives defending downed Black Hawk helicopter pilot CWO Michael Durant.
The highest civilian honor of all is the Presidential Medal of Freedom, considered to be a direct civilian equivalent of the Medal of Honor.

The Cardenas Medal of Honor was a decoration of the Revenue Cutter Service which was established by an act of Congress in the year 1900.
With the founding of the United States Coast Guard, however, the medal was authorized for wear on active duty Coast Guard uniforms and thus became an unofficial decoration of the United States military.
Despite the similarity in name, the Cardenas Medal of Honor is not connected to the Medal of Honor.

The Cardenas Medal of Honor was established by Joint Resolution of Congress on May 3, 1900.
The Cardenas Medal of Honor commemorates the gallantry of the officers and men of the Revenue Cutter Hudson who, in the face of enemy fire during the Spanish-American War, towed the USS Winslow out of range of the enemy guns at Cardenas harbor on May 11, 1898.
The ribbon to the Cardenas Medal of Honor is similar to that of the Dewey Medal and consists of a wide center stripe of gold flanked by dark blue (the gold center stripe in this ribbon is wider than in the Dewey Medal).
