Cardiac surgery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cardiac surgery is surgery on the heart, typically to treat complications of ischemic heart disease (e.g.
The earliest operations that can be considered cardiac surgery were limited to the pericardium, and were pioneered by, among others, Francisco Romero[1], Dominique Jean Larrey, Henry Dalton, and Daniel Hale Williams.
John W. Kirklin at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota started using a Gibbon type pump-oxygenator in a series of successful operations, and was soon followed by surgeons in various parts of the world.

Cardiac surgeon's heart valve map parallels human genome project : 10/00
The Stanford cardiovascular surgeon is immersed in a federally sponsored research project to "map" the plumbing problems that cause heart murmurs and valve leakage in the human heart.
Surgery to repair the valve, when possible, is often successful and preferable to replacing the valve, but cardiac surgeons remain frustrated today because they still do not know exactly why the mitral valve leaks when IMR strikes.
David Lai, MD, a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons who has spent two years as a research fellow in Miller's lab, noted that fixing heart valves is unlike plumbing, where changing a washer is a common and relatively trivial activity.

 The Cardiac Surgeon's Plight
There is something wrong with the whole picture when a senior cardiac surgeon from a major training program mentions that one of his graduating fellows, after 3 years of intense thoracic training, is going to spend another year in vascular surgery.
Certainly, jobless graduating cardiac surgeons, graduates who are looking for super-fellowships in major centers, and the lucky ones who have jobs are paid less then any other specialty surgeon and at times equivalent to a primary care physician.
I feel it is in the psyche of surgeons and more so of cardiac surgeons, to work in an introverted fashion, and be egoistic and be happy with the surgical outcomes alone.

Pittsburgh cardiac surgeon, inventor honored for life's work
The techniques were horrendously primitive by today's standards: a surgeon would cut a small incision in a heart, insert his finger and use it to unclog a narrowed valve.
But in 1961, with the advent of a new artificial valve known as the ball-in-a-cage model, surgeons were hopeful of success in treating these problems.
We were both young surgeons trying to explore and make contributions to the emerging field in heart surgery, and I participated in some of the surgical procedures with him in Pittsburgh.

 Dr Ramchandani Houston Cardiac Surgeon
Most people are surprised to learn that in "traditional" bypass surgery, surgeons use the assistance of the heart-lung machine along with medications to stop the heart so the bypass can be performed on a motionless field.
The heart-lung machine is referred to as a "pump" because it continues to mechanically pump oxygen and nutrients to the body during surgery.
In recent years, cardiac surgeons have explored less invasive alternatives to traditional bypass procedures.

Norman E. Shumway, the famed Stanford surgeon who performed the first successful heart transplant in America nearly 40 years ago and pioneered the development of other major innovations in cardiac surgery, died from complications of cancer Friday at his home in Palo Alto.
Shumway was acknowledged worldwide as one of the world's great experts on diseases of the heart, a leader in the training of other cardiac surgeons, and a visionary who worked closely with the researchers who created the drugs that prevent rejection of transplanted hearts and other organs.
Almost 6 feet tall, the sometimes diffident Shumway was fond of joking with his colleagues, at ease and comforting toward his patients, and candid in his appraisal of advances in his field.
