As I lived just outside Caerphilly in the Rhymney valley, Cardiff Central was my main hangout and many many Saturdays were spent sitting at the west end of Platform 3.
You were afforded an excellent view of the trains as they arrived from Swansea and in the distance was the bulk of Cardiff Canton (CF) depot.
Fortunately for trainspotters, there was a footbridge that crossed the 4 track main to the depot entrance and from this many of the loco's on shed were visible as well as all of the mainline traffic.
