Service was discontinued in 1971 with the Amtrak takeover, although resurrected briefly by Amtrak later in the 1970's.
Route handled Amtrak overnight trains east of Chicago until 1990, when Pennsylvania Railroad successor Conrail was allowed to downgrade much of the trackage west of Alliance, Ohio.
And with the 1971 formation of Amtrak, the Milwaukee Road route emerged as the survivor, with the city of Milwaukee along that route giving that route the population advantage.

On December 17, 1999, Amtrak initiated the Kentucky Cardinal, a new route between Indianapolis and Jeffersonville, Indiana (across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky).
Amtrak justified the train's existence in the context of passenger transportation by making it an overnight train with a sleeping car, as a 12-plus-hour day train (for a mere 312 miles) could never compete with an equivalent 1-hour flight, or even 5-hour drive.
Though nothing would change the fact that we were riding the final Kentucky Cardinal, and the plaintiffs' case is considered to be a longshot, he said the case was received by the local US District court, and could go to hearing within a few weeks.

When my son James and I rode the Cardinal to Chicago this winter, we passed the eastbound Cardinal somewhere in West Virginia, and I estimated that the train was four hours late.
The Cardinal, I've heard, is a political train--a bone tossed to the politicians of West Virginia and other states so that their constituents have some train service.
The Cardinal may be infrequent and often late, but for all that, it does carry a good number of passengers.

The idea of a lengthy trip on Amtrak puts most people's teeth on edge, and back in the early 1980s when I first rode this train it was a nightmare of broken seats that refused to recline and windows so badly scratched you could get only a faded, impressionistic view of the world outside.
Now standard on most Amtrak Western and Midwestern routes, Superliner equipment means fatter seats with enough leg room for an average-size man to stretch his legs out as far as they'll go and barely reach the metal footrest bolted to the seat in front of him.
The Cardinal's observation car unshackles you from this sense of slithering along, in part because it's up high on the train's second deck, and in part because, for nearly all of the Washington-to-Cincinnati segment of the route (the Cardinal continues on to Chicago), the scenery is wild and very beautiful.

The depot that Amtrak used for the Cardinal stop at that time was a wretched run down building but beautiful railroad design and has now been renovated to the tune of $800,000 plus and it's appearance is now back to it's original build specs...Including the real tile roof.
It is the Trail Head for our Cardinal Greenway Trail and it has offices of the trail in it and a meeting room and a small railroad display of artifacts and a snacks area...There was a small grade heading north out of Muncie as it sure is noticable on the bike.
I used to watch the Amtrak Cardinal make it's stop here.....The NS parallels it for a few hundred feet at the depot and it is separated by an iron fence....There is another railroad bridge {to cross White River}, parallel to the Trail {abandoned about 30 years ago}, that served the Pennsylvania RR...a branch to Mathews.

Amtrak finally learned that the New River Gorge of West Virginia was quite an attraction, and when it stopped running the Cardinal through the dead of night, ridership began to pick up.
Amtrak, though it wasn't in a fiscal position to help, as CSX and Southern were, was an active partner in that, and I think that is an example of how we can do very well in the future.
Amtrak faces many challenges in meeting the Congress' direction that the railroad be free of operating subsidies by the end of 2002.

Amtrak's westbound Cardinal #51 of Sunday 12-23 operated with 4 coaches, but without a Sightseer lounge car.
Also, I think I heard somewhere that the Cardinal has occasionally been operating with _just_ a trans dorm and no sleeper, and paid guests are riding in it.
The Cardinal uses Superliner I cars; occasionally a Superliner II car can be found in the consist.

Included in the cuts were the Washington-to-Chicago Cardinal, which stops in Charleston, Huntington and White Sulphur Springs, and the Capitol Limited, which also runs between Washington and Chicago and stops in Harpers Ferry.
Amtrak officials said Thursday (February 7) they would look into the effects of Byrd's provision.

This is a report on a private car trip (dubbed "The Greenbrier Limited"), behind Amtrak's Cardinal, from Cincinnati to Clifton Forge and return on Sunday September 8th.
The original plan was for train 50 to backup and set out the 3 private cars on the station's other run-through track; the cars would be parked there until train 51 arrived and then backed down against them later in the afternoon.
The car's interior retains its Amtrak era decor for the present time, as the owner has focused his attention on mechanical refurbishing before turning to cosmetics.
