The Cardinal is a passenger train route operated by Amtrak in the Midwestern and Northeastern United States.
The Cardinal (Train 51 westbound and train 50 eastbound) runs on the tracks of freight railroads CSX and Norfolk Southern, and on Amtrak's own rails in the Northeast Corridor.
Cardinal and Hoosier State passengers may ride in spacious reserved Coach seating.

The James Whitcomb Riley was renamed the Cardinal on October 30, 1977, as the cardinal was the state bird of all six states through which it ran.
On April 27, 1986 the Cardinal was rerouted to use the same tracks as the Hoosier State from Chicago to Indianapolis.
From December 17, 1999 to July 4, 2003, the Hoosier State was extended south from Indianapolis to Louisville, Kentucky and renamed the Kentucky Cardinal.

The state flag is "regulation in addition to the American flag, with all of the military forces in the State of Indiana, and in all public functions in which the state may or shall officially appear." The state colors are always carried or displayed on the observer's right of the Stars and Stripes.
The cardinal, (Richmondena Cardinalis Cardinalis), was adopted as the state bird by an act of the General Assembly on March 9, 1933.
