Constructed at the former RNAS Station at Howden in Yorkshire, the Vickers-built competitor flew to the Government airship establishment at Cardington, Bedfordshire on its maiden flight in the morning of 16 December 1929.
At the huge (surviving) hangars at Cardington, two teams, the other led by the Air Ministry, competed to prove their impressive craft capable of flying from the UK to India.
The main Canadian mooring station was at the airport in Saint-Hubert, Quebec; it is estimated that one million people visited the airship there upon its arrival.

As you might expect its heavily supported and run from Cardington Village but this is not a ‘not in my backyard’ campaign.
At 16.3m high and covering 33 acres, the size and height of the structure is inappropriate for such a historical setting.

On 7 November 1960, two hundred and forty six people arrived at RAF Cardington in Bedfordshire to commence their induction into the Royal Air Force.
After ten days this group moved on to RAF Bridgnorth in Shropshire to commence eight weeks of actual Basic Training and from there the 123 were split up into different groups and posted to their respective Trade Training Units.
The momentous journey to the Maldives was made even more significant by the presence of a film crew immediately before take-off who were making a 'Look At Life' film popular at the time as a filler between the B-movie and the main feature film at cinemas of the day.
