UCLA Cardiology Fellowship Training Program - Scope of Training
All cardiology trainees are trained in the performance and interpretation of exercise ECG tests during their noninvasive laboratory rotations.
Cardiology fellows are responsible for teaching and supervising residents in internal medicine as well as medical students, other cardiology trainees and allied health personnel and for working collaboratively with other health care professionals.
Cardiology trainees are expected to provide confidential evaluations of each faculty member they work with regarding the quality of teaching and professional conduct.

 Physician Assistants and Cardiology
In the field of cardiology, PAs' rigorous medical education, versatility, and commitment to patient care are "just what the doctor ordered." The addition of a PA to a practice offers a busy cardiologist the benefits of higher patient satisfaction levels, increased revenues, and a more flexible work schedule.
Cardiology PAs' knowledge of the pharmacologic effects of vasoactive/cardiotonic drugs, ventilator management, and artificial cardiac devices facilitates the treatment of inpatients and outpatients with cardiac conditions.
Comparing 929 diagnostic catheterizations performed by PAs with supervision by a cardiologist to 4,521 catheterizations performed by cardiology fellows, the study showed the incidence of major complications, such as myocardial infarction, stroke, arrhythmia requiring defibrillation or pacemaker placement, pulmonary edema requiring mechanical ventilation, and vascular complications requiring surgical intervention, were nearly identical in both groups.

During the test, your EKG is continuously monitored; blood pressure measurements are done prior to, during and after the test.
A graded exercise stress test (GXT) is the observation and recording of an individual physiological response during a measured exercise challenge.
The test gives information about the presence and type of arrhythmia (disturbances in the heart's rhythm), can be used to determine the effectiveness of various drug therapy, i.e., medication that is given for high blood pressure, arrhythmias, or angina.

Special supplies are used for this procedure, including a larger groin catheter, a small wire to cross the area of disease, and a balloon-tipped catheter to inflate within the area of disease.
During this procedure, a catheter with a special grinding device is used to clear away the plaque in your blocked artery.
When the procedure is complete, the groin catheter (sheath) may be removed and pressure applied to the puncture site for 20 to 30 minutes to stop the bleeding or one of several closure devices may be used to seal the artery.

First, diagnostic tests furnished to hospital inpatients or outpatients will not be subject to these regulations where the outpatient tests are performed by or under the supervision of the hospital or where the inpatient tests are performed under arrangement with the hospital and billed by the hospital.
Second, diagnostic tests personally performed by a physician or services billed as "incident to" physician services would not be subject to the requirements.
