Scoliosis and ECG evidence of cardiomyopathy were found in over two-thirds of the patients studied; pes cavus, distal amyotrophy, optic atrophy, nystagmus and deafness were all less frequent.
Diabetes appeared to be associated with a higher incidence of optic atrophy and deafness.
Similarly, cardiomyopathy ran true within affected members of the same sibship, but there were instances of discordance which suggest that the development of the non-neurological features of Friedreich's ataxia may be controlled by modifying genes rather than heterogeneity of the main gene.

The combination of diabetes mellitus, neurosensory hearing loss, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a rare disease, occurring in less than 1 in 2000 in general population.
It was evaluated at about 2% in patients with neurosensory hearing loss, at 10% in those with both neurosensory hearing loss and diabetes mellitus, and at 13% if there is a family history of possible maternal inheritance of hearing loss or diabetes mellitus.
The age of onset of diabetes mellitus, neurosensory hearing loss, and cardiomyopathy in these patients is between their teens and forties.

Research into the biochemistry, neurobiology, and biophysics of central and peripheral nerves, heart and skeletal muscle, and the interactions between muscle and nerve to uncover the pathological process of Friedreich's ataxia is being carried out.
In addition, studies of diabetes and heart disease are being conducted in order to determine their relationship with this neurological disorder.
Generally, within 15 to 20 years after the appearance of the first symptoms, the person is confined to a wheelchair, and in later stages of the disease, individuals become completely incapacitated.

Heart failure patients treated for diabetes with insulin have increase in mortality
UCLA researchers for the first time showed that advanced heart failure patients with diabetes who are treated with insulin faced a mortality rate four times higher than heart failure patients with diabetes treated with oral medications.
Researchers assessed the history of diabetes and insulin treatment in 554 patients with advanced heart failure after adjusting for various risk factors.
One year survival rates were 89.7 percent for non-diabetic patients, 85.8 percent for non-insulin-treated diabetic patients, and only 62.1 percent for insulin-treated diabetic patients.

Mitochondrial DNA in Aging and Disease
Sometimes inherited mitochondrial DNA defects yield premature versions of disorders that afflict many people in their later years, such as diabetes, deafness, heart disease, muscle weakness, movement problems and dementia.
A particularly intriguing possibility is that a significant fraction of type II (maturity-onset) diabetes mellitus, which afflicts millions of Americans older than 40 years, may be rooted in inherited mitochondria DNA defects still to be discovered.
Diabetes is known to run in families, and the mother is often the affected parent (as would be expected with mitochondrial DNA inheritance).

 Coenzyme Q10
A review of the most recent studies involving CoQ10 and its health-protective effects reveals a promising role for this nutrient in breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, heart attacks, lowering ‘bad’ cholesterol, brain function, fertility, and as a supportive antioxidant that restores and regenerates other antioxidants.
Recently, a small, but significant, study, by pioneer CoQ10 researchers at the Langsjoen Clinic in Tyler, Texas, showed that this coenzyme has a powerful influence in correcting an often fatal heart condition: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which involves an abnormal enlargement of the heart muscle, a condition accompanied by depressing fatigue and difficulty in breathing.
In another human clinical trial, researcher William Lee, Ph.D., found that, on a daily dosage of 60 mg of CoQ10 for 3-12 weeks, patients with cardiovascular problems, cancer, and diabetes significantly raised their levels of immunoglobulin G, an antibody important for immune function.
