  Cardrona - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cardrona is the name of a locality, skifield and beer in New Zealand.
Established as a gold rush township in the 1860's on the banks of the small river of the same name, it is known for its distinctive hotel of gold rush vintage which is on the opposite side of the river to the orginal township of which few buildings remain.
A fascinating history, including the now almost-forgotten contribution of the labour from thousands of Chinese workers, is revealed by historical features such as the Cardrona Hotel (a superb place for a meal and a pint) and the much-loved Cardrona Hall and Church, the location of the annual Cardrona Folk Music Festival.

The township of Cardrona began in 1865, when hundreds of settlers came to the Cardrona Valley, eager to stake their claim.
As the years passed, Cardrona expanded and by 1871 the population was such that it had become the centre of the butchery trade in Central Otago.
Cardrona remained an important commercial centre through the 1870s and 1880s, although it fluctuated with the changing fortunes of the mining industry.

In the two times I have been to Cardrona, I have been very impressed with the quality of snow, the instructors, the runs and the other facilities available such as toilets, restaurant and hireage.
Cardrona is becoming known as a world-class snowboarding facility and they've got four international halfpipes going up there - I don't really snowboard but I know snowboarders are impressed by the facilities and the competitors looked pretty awesome!
I'm returning to Cardrona for more skiing (yay!) in July of this year so I'll be able to update and re-advise you on Wanaka accommodation and more of the excellent facilities that exist up the mountain...this time the fl runs?!?!
