Caress of Steel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Caress of Steel was the third album by Rush, released in 1975.
Rush's Led Zeppelin influence is still prominent on this record, most obviously in the song "Bastille Day", though it is apparent on all three of the shorter songs on the album.
The liner notes for Caress of Steel include a memoriam for Rod Serling of The Twilight Zone.

Ground and Sky review - Rush - Caress of Steel
While Caress of Steel shows Rush changing their direction towards progressive rock, they still had one more album to go before they could truly be considered as such.
Peart was a progressive rock fan as well as an avid reader and he was largely responsible for quickly transforming Rush from a hard rock power trio to one of the first prog-metal bands.
Rush dubbed their Caress of Steel tour the "Down the Tubes Tour" as a reflection of where their musical careers were heading if they didn't quickly come up with something better.

Steel is a metal alloy whose major component is iron, with carbon content between 0.02% and 1.7% by weight.
Steel with increased carbon content can be made harder and stronger than iron, but is also more brittle.
Steel is also to be distinguished from wrought iron with little or no carbon, usually less than 0.035%.

RUSH Caress of Steel reviews and MP3
'Caress Of Steel' is often cited by many fans as being the nadir of Rush's very long career- it's a sentiment that the band themselves seem to agree with these days; at best they tend to see it as a stepping stone towards the superb '2112' that followed.
CARESS OF STEEL was the beginning of Rush amazing epic works, with that masterpiece called "The Fountain Of Lamneth", my only complain is that I would have wished to listen to all of this tracks with no spaces.
'Caress of Steel' was released a year before '2112' and two before the first of Rush's truly epic albums 'A Farewell to Kings', both vital stepping stones in it's attainment.

Caress of Steel and Fly by Night, both 1975 releases, are the albums on which Rush started to grow beyond it's strictly Led Zeppelin influenced, hard-rocking jams and began to toy around with a more sophisticated format.
Granted, Rush was still trying to get a grip on that format on both Fly by Night and Caress of Steel, but the songs on both albums show a rapidly-maturing band.
On Caress of Steel, we're treated to two extended jams -- "The Necromancer," which clocks in at 12:29 and is built up of three distinct tunes; and "The Fountain of Lamenth," which runs at 19:58 and is made up of six songs.

Many later albums suffer from overproduction, Caress of Steel is before the commercialitis set in (to the music world).
Then, beginning with "Caress of Steel" and ending with "Hemispheres," each album contained one or more "opus," i.e., long story-like songs, with social messages masked behind fantasy or science fiction themes.
Though their fourth studio album, "2112" is considered their masterpiece, it is "Caress of Steel" that I still keep in my car and listen to.

It is the first and so far only Caress of Steel tour live recording to make its way into circulation.
There is a brief Neil Peart interview at the beginning of the show during which he comments on the lack of success Rush was having during the DOWN THE TUBES TOUR and the recording closes with the announcer talking about merchandise availability for the opening act, KISS.
At this point Neil has been with them for over a year and they have 2 albums under their belt, so things are tighter and they are coming across like one unit, which I've always thought was one of their strong points.

Epinions.com - Enter the Fantasy World of Rush's Caress of Steel
Before they were labeled as a science fiction influenced band, Rush crafted an album in 1975, their third studio album at the time, that explored some of the darker, fantasy driven themes that would resurface in many of their later works.
Interestingly enough, Caress of Steel (See my album review at: http://www.epinions.com/content_21448330884) was initially scorned by most critics and fans a like.
Today, however, Caress of Steel is viewed upon as one of Rush's finest albums from any era.

 Band Chat - Rush
Its core is a straightforward rock record with excellent musicianship (songwriting and technical ability, like the lead song, "Anthem" (92,516 byte.wav file)), but here we also find "By-Tor and the Snow Dog", a mini-epic that would serve as recipe for some of Rush's most mature work.
Caress of Steel was doomed from the get-go (the printer responsible for the album jacket thought that steel was copper in color).
Ambitious as ever, Rush succeeds with the 20+ minute "2112" (136,292 byte.wav file) due to its gripping story and guitar riffs that are so catchy you can't drive them from your head.

I replaced Caress with a copy on LP that is still the only way I have to listen to the album.
Anyways, I feel that Caress is where Rush really started coming into their own and was a precursor to the golden era that started with 2112.

After building up a cult following with years of non-stop touring, Rush nearly lost their fans with CARESS OF STEEL.
Taking their cue from British bands like Yes and Genesis, they began to expand their sound beyond that of a typical power trio.
This theme would surface many times in later songs, the band adopting it as their philosophy.

When Rush finished their third album, Caress of Steel, the trio was assured that they had created their breakthrough masterpiece.
But when the album dropped off the charts soon after its release, it proved otherwise.
The first side contains two strong and more succinct tracks, the raging opener, "Bastille Day," and the more laid-back "Lakeside Park," both of which would become standards for their live show in the '70s.

Caress of Steel is dedicated to portraying and accompanying ego death.
The subsequent albums were reflections and echoes of that highest blast of inspiration and forceful moment of revision of the egoic worldview, the blast which is unmistakably represented by "No One at the Bridge".
Most of all, in the song "No One at the Bridge", which is possibly the best high philosophy song ever written, as it deals with the helpless confrontation of fate that cancels the power of the self-controlling, cybernetic steersman.

 The Steel Caress
Jessica Hall's The Steel Caress is a good espionage tale with a touch of romance.
Its Japanese/Chinese backdrop will definitely appeal to fans of, say, Eric V Lustbader, but unlike Lustbader who often shows no sense of chronology in his prose, all you need to understand the whole story in The Steel Caress is to read the whole thing from the start of this author's The White Tiger Sword trilogy.
But even then, there's enough to savor in what is the best book from this author to date.

Caress of Steel was sort of a crossroads for Rush, taking them from their more metal beginnings into the progressive directions that would characterize the next phase of their career.
Much of this album is quite metallic, but with many strong prog leanings, hence the inclusion as prog metal.
