  Cargados Carajos Information
Cargados Carajos Shoals (also known as the Saint Brandon Rocks) are a group of about 16 small islands and islets on an extended reef in the Indian Ocean northeast of Mauritius.
In the past, Cargados Carajos was large, volcanic island (part of th Mascarenes, caused by the Réunion hotspot).
This reference is most commonly used when the user wants to refer a derided subject to hell, as in "¡Vete al Carajo!" (In the Castillian Spanish spoken in Spain, the word "carajo" has a phallic connotation, which was lost in its mutation into Puerto Rican Spanish).

The Mascarene Islands (or Mascarenhas Archipelago) is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, which includes Mauritius, Réunion, Rodrigues, and Cargados Carajos shoals.
The northern part of the plateau, including the Seychelles, is formed of granite, and is a fragment of the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana.
Limestone banks found on the plateau are the remnants of coral reefs, indicating that the plateau was a succession of islands.

This process started 64 Ma, after the separation of the Mascarene Plateau and India, about 35 Ma the Saya de Malha bank was formed, later the Nazareth bank and the Cargados Carajos Shoals (Saint Brandon).
The young age of Mauritius does not suspect this, meaning that the ancestor of the Mascarene forms probably used the islands of the Nazareth bank and the Cargados Carajos Shoals as stepping stones to colonize in a later stage Mauritius.
The Mascarenes were probably colonized from the more northern Nazareth bank (now submerged) and Cargados Carajos Islands.

 Mascarene Plateau at AllExperts
The southern part of the plateau, including the Saya de Malha Bank, Nazareth Bank, the Cargados Carajos Shoals (Saint Brandon), and the mountainous islands of Mauritius, Réunion, and Rodrigues, were formed by the Réunion hotspot.
The banks and shoals were once volcanic islands much like Mauritius and Réunion, which have now sunk or eroded to below sea level, or, in the case of the Cargados Carajos, to low coral islands.
Limestone banks found on the plateau are the remnants of coral reefs, indicating that the plateau was a succession of islands.

The Mascarene Islands (or Mascarenhas Archipelago) is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar comprising Mauritius, Réunion, Rodrigues, Cargados Carajos shoals, plus the former islands of the Saya de Malha, Nazareth and Soudan banks.
Had the erosion not taken place, Cargados Carajos would have been a large volcanic island, and the Mascarenes would have been an archipelago of seven or more (counting Saya De Malha, Nazareth and Soudan) large, populated islands, rather than the three (Mauritius, Reunion, Rodrigues) that remain today.
The southern part of the plateau, including the Saya de Malha Bank, Nazareth Bank, Soudan Banks and Cargados Carajos Shoals (Saint Brandon) (then one large island), was formed by the Réunion hotspot.
