Ministerie van OCW - English - Broadcasting Services Corporation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
In this same period the public broadcasters, which transmit on three television channels (Nederland 1, 2 and 3), have seen a halving of their share of the public's viewing time, which has dropped from around 75% in 1990 to stabilise at just under 40% in the last few years.
The broadcasting time on the public radio and television channels is shared by a large number of private organisations which have obtained a broadcasting licence because they represent a certain section of the population (broadcasting associations and small licensed broadcasters) or have a specific programming brief (NOS, NPS and the educational broadcasting service).
Until 2000, the public broadcasting system in the Netherlands was funded from the (fluctuating) advertising revenues of STER and the licence fee, which was fixed by law and had to be paid by every household in possession of a radio and/or television set.

Preserving public private media space in a landscape - JAMAICAOBSERVER.COM
Background for the discussion was a paper, The Future of Public Service Broadcasting in the Caribbean, which I prepared for the CBU based on a study of the private and public broadcasting systems and operations in 18 countries of the region.
Most of the expansion was undertaken by the private sector as governments, prodded by the ideology of the market and their own financial weakness, retreated from broadcasting thus reversing the dominant role of the state for most of the last 40 years.
While it may be difficult to agree on what constitutes public service broadcasting, there was agreement on some key objectives that it should achieve: Public broadcasting was seen as essential to supporting democratic participation and good governance, serving as a counterweight to the cultural messages in foreign programming and cementing the regional integration process.
