It is the largest urban area on Vancouver Island (not to be confused with the city of Vancouver, which lies 90 minutes northeast by ferry on the British Columbia mainland).
With the discovery of gold on the British Columbia mainland in 1858, Victoria became the port, supply base, and outfitting centre for miners on their way to the Cariboo gold fields.
In 1886, with the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus on Burrard Inlet, Victoria's position as the commercial centre of British Columbia was irrevocably lost to the City of Vancouver.

Richmond is an incorporated city on the Pacific coast of the Canadian province of British Columbia.
Since all of Richmond's land occupies islands in a river delta, the municipality has plenty of rich, alluvial soil for agriculture, and was one of the first areas in British Columbia to be farmed by Europeans in the 19th century.
In the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Richmond has three seats, all of which were comfortably won by the BC Liberal Party in the 2005 provincial elections.

 Lillooet British Columbia
The District of Lillooet is picturesquely located on the sage and pine covered bench lands of the Fraser River in South Central British Columbia.
Lillooet, with its 13 saloons, 25 licenced premises and clutter of cabins and tents, had a shifting population of over 15,000 residents in the 1860's and was the biggest little gold rush settlement in the Cariboo district (now British Columbia).
Many towns along the Cariboo Highway are helpfully referred to by the distance north along the original Gold Rush Trail from Lillooet.
