The woodland (or mountain) caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) are considered to be the most endangered large mammal in the lower 48 states.
Objectives of the study are designed to significantly increase the endangered population of woodland caribou in the Selkirk Mountains of Washington, Idaho, and British Columbia.
Caribou are captured on snow-covered ridges in nets that are shot over animal from a special rifle fired by a biologist in a helicopter.

That brings to four the number of counties where drought emergencies have been approved by the Governor this year.
The latest snowpack report shows the Bear River basin at only 47 percent of normal, and the inflows to Bear Lake are forecast to be 7 percent of average this year.
Caribou County Commissioners requested the drought declaration, and the Idaho Department of Water Resources approved the request, before forwarding it to the Governor for his approval.

Named for the Caribou Mountains, which in turn are named for Cariboo Fairchild, who had taken part in the gold rush in the Cariboo region of British Columbia in 1860.

Irrigators in Caribou County are suffering from severely restricted water supplies for the current irrigation season.
Caribou County Commissioners had requested the declaration, which was approved by the Idaho Department of Water Resources prior to being sent to the Governor.
Under the declaration, irrigators in the county can work with IDWR to secure temporary water rights and make modifications to existing water rights.

Caribou is a City in Aroostook County, incorporated on April 5, 1859 as the town of Lyndon from Eaton Plantation and part of half township H. In 1869 Lyndon annexed Eaton, Sheridan and Forestville plantations.
On February 26th of that year its name was changed to Caribou, then back to Lyndon on March 9th.
