Though Carignan says he is “in favor of peace and justice” in the Middle East, Jewish groups are angered by what they see as a misjudgment at best, and a provocation at worst.
Carignan, 61, was a Quebec provincial bureaucrat in 2000 when he ran for a seat in the federal Parliament for the Liberal Party, narrowly defeating the incumbent.
Carignan defended his position on the Middle East, saying that he backs the creation of a Palestinian state, is sympathetic to the Palestinian people “because they live in far worse conditions than their neighbors,” and does not consider Arafat a terrorist.

The Carignan-Salières Regiment arrived in Quebec City in the summer of 1665.
The regiment counted twenty companies and each company was made up of three officers - a captain, a lieutenant and an ensign - two sergeants, three corporals, five anspessades and forty soldiers, including at least one drummer.
Four other companies drawn from the regiments of Lignières, Chambellé, Poitou and Orléans coming from the West Indies also came to Quebec City with Marquis de Tracy, the new governor general.

 SFDRSC - The Carignan Regiment Soldiers
The pleas of the colonists of New France for assistance in their struggle with the Iroquois were answered in 1665 with the arrival of the first French regular troops in Canada, the Carignan-Salières Regiment.
Between June and September 1665, some 1200 soldiers and their officers arrived in Quebec, under the leadership of Lt. General Alexander de Prouville, Sieur de Tracy.
The series of forts established by the Regiment along the Richelieu River, along with the success of its second campaign into the land of the Mohawk Indians, led to a long period of peace for the colony, which permitted it to prosper.
