 Carina Walters (Avengers foe)
I personally think that when Carina said she was an Elder, that she meant that she was the daughter of an elder, and by extension, sort of an Elder herself.
The word carina is a medical term, referring to the bifurcation your trachea takes in your chest when it splits into the first two bronchi, which lead to the lungs.
Carina however, has not been seen alive, and presumably remains dead, so unless she is shown living, she must not be an Elder.

Discussion: Tracheal bronchus is a bronchial branch arising directly from the lateral wall of the trachea at any point above the carina.
Tracheal bronchi are almost always found on the right, originating from the lateral wall of the trachea.
CT: Right upper lobe bronchus originating from trachea immediately above the carina.

BPI Tech Brief #19; Liquid Ventilation (Mike Darwin)
The smaller, inner tube is connected to a reservoir-pump-oxygenator-heat exchanger assembly (the liquid ventilator) and carries oxygenated and chilled liquid breathing media down the tube where it is delivered into the trachea at a point just above that of the carina.
A large tube is placed in the patient's windpipe (trachea) by either endotracheal intubation (passage of the tube down the mouth and into the trachea past the vocal cords) or preferably by tracheotomy (wherein the trachea is surgically opened through the skin of the neck and a tube placed directly in it).
The important thing was that this early work (conducted starting two years ago) established the feasibility of liquid ventilation in achieving the rates of cooling and increase in mean arterial pressure and cardiac output in CPR that were needed for both cryonics and non cryonics applications.

 Case of the week
On the chest xray, one may see hyperinflation of a portion or all of the right lung (occasionally the left lung is hyperinflated) and on the lateral view, there may be a mass between the trachea and esophagus at or near the level of the carina.
The result of this anomaly often is some compression of the right lung and often there is concomittent abnormality of the trachea at the level of the aberrant vessel, such as complete tracheal rings.
Because of the failure of the developing left lung to make contact with the left pulmonary artery, there is a persistent connection with the right pulmonary artery.

 Indian Pediatrics - Editorial
The left main bronchus can be visualized in its entirety from the carina, after turning towards the left, and even then it takes a curving course so that its bifurcation cannot be seen from the carina.
This bronchus may extend for 2-2.5 cm at which point it gives rise to the middle lobe bronchus anteriorly, the superior segment of the right lower lobe posteriorly and the right lower lobe bronchus that divides into basilar segments.
The right upper lobe bronchus itself may have a length of 1cm before dividing into the anterior, posterior and apical segmental bronchi.

 Lung Anatomy
In the center of the chest, the trachea divides at the carina into two branches, the main bronchi.
Lymphatic vessels then exit these nodes and pass upward into the mediastinum, a central space in the chest surrounding the trachea and major blood vessels.
Each bronchus then further branches at the hilum giving off first lobar and then segmental bronchi (the limbs of the tree).

 Anatomy - Upper Extremity
At the bifurcation of the trachea the openings of the two main bronchi are separated internally by a sharp ridge called the carina (Gr., keel).
Bronchial arteries and veins, as well as branches of the pulmonary arteries, follow the bronchi closely.
The other basal segmental bronchi of the left lower lobe are named the same as those on the right lower lobe; namely, lateral basal and posterior basal.

CHEST: Closure of a postpmeumonectomy main bronchus fistula using video-assisted mediastinal surgery
Furthermore, it is conceivable that in some patients rigid fibrosis and tight adhesion of the inflammatory pleural membrane to the lower trachea and carina may render use of a stapling device difficult or impossible.
We conclude that closure of a main bronchus fistula using VAMS in patients with a short bronchial stump is a promising technique that deserves further development.

 Esophageal Atresia and Tracheoesophageal Fistula
The absence of intestinal air on the radiograph is diagnostic of esophageal atresias without tracheal fistulae.
Esophageal atresia is overwhelmingly more common in association with a tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) between the distal esophagus and the carina or close to it.
Fistulae between the proximal esophageal segment and the trachea are rare.

The authors speculated that perhaps the bevel of the endotracheal tube impinged on the carina or the wall of the main stem bronchus.
The analysis of the results showed that in all three parts of the study, the EDD correctly identified either tracheal or esophageal intubation and correlated with capnography 100% of the time.
