Agardh studierte ab 1799 Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik an der Universität Lund und promovierte dort 1805 zum Doktor der Philosophie.
Weiter schrieb Agardh auch Abhandlungen über staatsökonomische Fragen, war Abgeordneter seines Stifts zum Reichstag und Mitglied des 1827 und 1828 berufenen Erziehungskomitees.
Zu Agardhs berühmtesten Nachfahren zählt sein Enkel Gustaf Fröding, einer der wichtigsten schwedischen Lyriker der 1890er Jahre.

His initial _Synopsis algarum Scandinaviae_ (1817) will be expanded into the _Species algarum_ (1821-1828) and the _Systema algarum_ (1824), and his broader views on the natural system in botany will appear in the series _Aphorismi botanici_ (1817-1826) and in _Classes plantarum_ (1825).
In 1835 Agardh will be appointed to the bishopric of Karlstad, and will abandon his botanical work.

Adolphia: named for Adolphe Theodore Brongniart (1801-1876), son of mineralogist, chemist, geologist and paleontologist Alexandre Brongniart.
Adolphe was a student of the Rhamnaceae, a pioneer in the study of plant morphology and physiology, author of an important work on fossil plants, and a French botanist whose classifications of fossil plants showed surprisingly accurate relationships between extant and extinct forms.
In 1831 he became an assistant to the botanist Rene Desfontaines at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, and took his place two years later, a position he was to hold for the remainder of his life.
