Professor Carl Stephen Alfred Chinn MBE (born 6 September 1956) is a historian, writer, radio presenter, magazine editor, newspaper columnist, media personality, local celebrity, and famous Brummie, whose working life has been devoted to the study and popularisation of the city of Birmingham in England.
Chinn holds the position of Professor of Community History at the University of Birmingham and is also director of the Birmingham Lives project.
Chinn's parents were Alfred and Sylvia, he was married in 1978 to Kathleen Doyle.

Carl's belief in the importance of the testimony of working-class people was strengthened by his experiences as an adult education tutor.
Consequently, Carl now has what is probably the biggest archive of working-class life stories in the world, consisting of thousands of letters and photos, hundreds of oral history interviews and a variety of memorabilia and ephemera.
In 1998 Carl was one of only 200 citizens of Birmingham who were invited to meet President Clinton during the G8 summit in the city and during this time he gave a talk on Birmingham to the G8 ambassadors.

Professor Carl Chinn, a Birmingham historian, claims the redevelopment has neglected those who traditionally shopped and made their living in the Bull Ring.
He said traders and barrow boys from the historic markets, part of Birmingham since a charter was awarded in 1166, had to sacrifice their street pitches when the first indoor shopping centre opened in the 60s.
Professor Chinn said the optimism did not last and was replaced by disillusionment in the following decade.

Carl Chinn also wrote the Foreword for the book "Brum Rocked!" Now, I don't know for sure that Carl Chinn isn't Charlie Chinn.
Carl Wayne has also been known as Charlie Wayne, so maybe the two names (Carl and Charlie) are interchangeable.

It is NOT a nasal accent any more so than certain people i have met from other parts of the country, there are massive variations of accent within the city and that is just down to how we are made and brought up.
As I said in the edit summary, here's an article by Carl Chinn, probably the chief authority on this dialect, which mentions the expression but makes no reference to "thoss".

Historian Carl Chinn is one of Brum's all-round good eggs.
The one word that crops up time and time again when people talk about Carl is 'enthusiastic.' He is certainly a bloke who brings history alive in his many fields of study and work.
I'm not quite sure how Carl fits everything in but he also writes a weekly column for the Express and Star and also produces a monthly magazine on all things Brum.

Community historian, Carl Chinn, whose brainchild the Centre is, and Lecturer in Birmingham Studies, Peter Leather will be moving in by the end of September to prepare the Centre for its public opening in the New Year.
