Carl has a distinctive voice and is also a great guitarist, but this album lacks weight.
Carl has his own sound and style that's distinct from the Beach Boys, much like Dennis did, and "Youngblood" is such an improvement over "Carl Wilson," that it's a shame he didn't press on to better things.
Like Dennis and Brian, Carl was given the gift of expressing his soul in his voice and writing, and in the course of the album, it is Carl's heart-on-his sleeve talent that pushes this album up.

Dennis isn't just a poet, but a storyteller, his long and weaving lines and meandering syntax feel like an open invitation to kick your shoes off and fix yourself a cup of tea.
Many of Dennis' poems seem autobiographical but describe action as if "you" are in his place, and this is a great skill for a narrative poet -- to invite the reader into the poem instead of simply saying "look at my life and how insightful I am." It is no wonder

A professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Dennis has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
In announcing the award, Joseph Parisi, the editor of Poetry, called Dennis "a poet who has valuable things to say - about faith (or its absence) in the modern world, fear, loneliness, life's regrets - the great What ifs and roads not taken - in ways that are personal and universal at the same time."

The group was formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California under the leadership of Brian Wilson, and included his brothers Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love and school friend Al Jardine.
In the late 70s Dennis Wilson also began to suffer increasingly from drug and alcohol abuse, and some of the group's concert appearances were marred by Dennis and other band members being drunk or drugged on stage.
Dennis Wilson's problems had escalated in the early 1980s and he accidentally drowned in late 1983 while diving from his boat as he drunkenly tried to recover items he had previously thrown overboard.
