Carl Ditters was one of the most prolific and versatile of the Viennese contemporaries of Haydn and Mozart.
Ditters grew up in comfortable financial circumstances and was able to enjoy the benefits of a good general education at a Jesuit school in addition to receiving private tuition in music, French and religion.
Dittersdorf wrote fluently and attractively in all genres and the number of prints and manuscript copies of his works which survive today bear witness to his great contemporary popularity.

HOASM: Carl [Karl] Ditters von Dittersdorf
In 1773 the prince made Ditters Amtshauptmannof nearby Freiwaldau, one of several measures to help entice the cosmopolitan composer to remain at the isolated Johannisberg; since this new post required a noble title, Ditters was sent to Vienna to become, for a fee, von Dittersdorf.
From the early 1780s Dittersdorf began making frequent appearances in Vienna: in 1784 or 1785 six of his twelve programmatic "Ovid" symphonies were performed in the imperial Augarten, and in 1786 his oratorio Hiobwas performed at a benefit for the Tonkünstlersozietät.
In 1794 Dittersdorf began composing comic operas for a small Silesian court theater at Oels (now Olésnica, Poland), which were mounted by the Weimarbased Waeser troupe.

The earliest known reference to a concert appearance by Stamitz occurs in an advertisement for a concert in Frankfurt am Main on 29 June 1742 at which he was to perform alternately on the violin, viola d'amore, cello and double bass as well as furnishing a concerto for two orchestras of his own composition.
Under the Elector Carl Theodor (1724-99), an enlightened ruler with strong interests in philosophy, science and the arts, the court at Mannheim became one of the most glittering in Europe.
Although an important patron of art and literature, Carl Theodor's central interest was music and he spared neither effort nor expense in building his court into one of the leading musical centres in Europe.

Dittersdorf had composition lessons from Giuseppe Bonno in his native Vienna and served as a violinist in the orchestra of the Prince of Sachsen-Hildburghausen, followed by a position in the imperial theatre.
Conditions in Johannisberg, the seat of the Prince-Bishop, deteriorated in the political circumstances of the time, and on the death of his employer in 1795, he moved with his family to join the household of a nobleman in Bohemia.
The chamber music of Dittersdorf, with all the clarity of classical style, includes string quartets and quintets, divertimenti and compositions for groups of wind instruments.

Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739–1799) was a remarkably talented contributor to the golden age of Viennese Classicism, but today his name is only familiar due to footnotes and passing references in immaculately researched volumes dedicated to his most prominent contemporaries.
In contrast to Haydn and Mozart, Dittersdorf was born and bred in Vienna but moved out to the provinces in pursuit of musical positions at various courts.
Dittersdorf's score is magnificent, featuring a violent storm scene with a chorus that makes Mozart's similar scene in Idomeneo look like just a bit of wind, flashy soprano roles to rival the Queen of the Night, and arias that convey an ample diversity of extrovert emotional responses.

 MUSI 4360
Perhaps the earliest reference to the actual ensemble itself comes from the autobiography of Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-1799), where he mentions that in 1756 he was rehearsing six (!) new quartets by Richter (Franz Xaver Richter 1709-1789).
At this point we can bring up the name Franz Josef Haydn (1732-1809) who was supposed, until this century, to be the originator, the creator, the animus of the string quartet.
The assertion can not really be disproven as there is no reference or definite evidence before his quartets op.1 which were likely written about the same time as von Dittersdorf's reference to Richter's quartets of 1756.
