Carl Fontana (July 18, 1928 - October 9, 2003) was a jazz trombonist.
Born in Monroe, Louisiana, Fontana was awarded a degree in musical education by the Louisiana State University in 1950.
It is fair to say that Carl Fontana is on every great jazz tombonist's list of great jazz trombonists.

The Fontanas lived in Monroe, Louisiana during the Depression (Carl was born there in 1928) and Collie supported his family by working as a plumber and by playing violin and saxophone in a band he inherited from another leader.
Fontana was always an athletic man and his first loves as a boy had been football, basketball and baseball.
Fontana co-led a group with the drummer Jake Hanna that recorded and appeared at festivals in 1975 and later toured Japan.

Fontana earned a bachelor's degree in music at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, and he began to work on a graduate degree in music when he was called to work with Woody Herman's "Third Herd" band.
Fontana was "taciturn, reticent, not a bragger," said Patrick Gaffey, supervisor of the Winchester Center, who interviewed the musician for the Las Vegas Jazz Society's newsletter.

Out of the blue, Carl put down his case, walked over to a horizontal bar, and gracefully did a back flip off the bar, walked back to his horn and quietly continued walking." Carl Fontana is a big man, but that incident is evidence that he is also athletic and agile.
Carl's life continued to be centered in Vegas but an August 1975 Concord Jazz Festival recording brought further attention and a Grammy nomination for best jazz combo recording of the year.

As a teenager Fontana played trombone in a band led by his father, then joined Woody Herman in 1952.
An enormously resourceful and inventive soloist, Fontana combines a phenomenal technique with a beautiful tone that he ably demonstrates on A Beautiful Friendship, recorded with Hanna at the 1975 Concord Jazz Festival.
He is equally at home in a roaring big band and small groups with bebop or dixieland orientation, but is at his rhapsodic best in mainstream bands where he is given plenty of solo space.

Trombone is a dificult instrument to capture on a recording, but this is a must for any trombonist like myself, or people who just appreciate darn good music and genius solos.
