Carl Fredrik Hill was born in 1849 in Lund, southern Sweden.
Hill's work had been noticed in 1876 by some of the Impressionists, who invited him to exhibit with them at their third group show in 1877.
Hill's varied subjects and styles over this period seem to have anticipated many modern movements and artists unknown to him, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso among them.

The word 'hunt' in its usual sense is also significant in Hill's fantasy world: in many of his poems he depicts almost naturalistic hunting scenes, where he himself often plays the leading part of the hunter.

During the 1870s, the painter Carl Fredrik Hill (1849-1911) was active in France where he developed into an important landscape artist with a very personal technique.
In 1878 Hill became psychotic with schizophrenia and after some years in a clinic he returned to his family home in Lund where his mother and sister looked after him.
Since the 1920s the drawings that Hill did while he was mentally ill have been recognized for their artistic merit and have proved an inspiration to poets; for example to Gunnar Ekelöf and Harry Martinsson in the 20th century.
