Martius assumed the role as surgeon for the expedition and was also given responsibilities for the botanical and ethnographical work.
On Martius’ return, the emperor appointed him to be curator of the royal herbarium (Botanische Staatssammlung, Munich), a position that Martius held for the next thirty years (until 1854).
Martius devoted twenty years on this series, with 46 of the total 130 fascicles of this folio series being published by the time of his death in 1868.

CARL FRIEDRICH PHILIPP VON MARTIUS (1794-1868), German botanist and traveller, was born on the 17th of April 1794 at Erlangen, where he graduated M.D. in 1814, publishing as his thesis a critical catalogue of plants in the botanic garden of the university.
He afterwards devoted himself to botanical study, and in 1817 he and J. von Spix were sent to Brazil by the king of Bavaria.
Its publication was continued after his death under the editorship of A. Eichler (1839-1887) until 1887, and subsequently of Ignaz von Urban.

It shows the crowning achievement of the career of Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, who was chosen by the Austrian Emperor, Franz I, as one of the members of a team that accompanied the Archduchess Leopoldine to Brazil in 1817.
Martius was only 23 at the time, and the work he set in progress is still used as the principal reference work for Brasilian flora today.
Flora brasiliensis was published between 1840 and 1906 by the editors Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, August Wilhelm Eichler, and Ignatz Urban, with the participation of 65 specialists from various countries.

Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794-1868) was one of the most famous naturalists of the nineteenth century.
Von Martius' private botanical collection grew, by purchase and exchange, to become one of the most important private herbaria of the nineteenth century.
Von Martius became an expert on palms and published the Historia Naturalis Palmarum, (3 volumes, 1823-1850) and, initially together with Endlicher, founded and edited the magnificent and monumental Flora Brasiliensis (1840-1906), of which 46 of the 130 fascicles were published before his death.

Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius was born on April 17th, 1794 in Erlangen and spent his youth there.
This is how in 1814, after finishing his degree in medicine with a botanical thesis, C. von Martius came to München, where he was to spend the remainder of his life.
Upon his return to München in 1821, C. von Martius began to write up his results, publishing in short sequence "Nova genera et species plantarum, quas in itinere per Brasiliam...collegit" (1824–1832, 3 volumes), "Icones selectae plantarum cryptogamicarum" (1827) and his opus magnus, the "Historia naturalis palmarum" (1823–1850, 3 folio volumes with 135 plates).

In 1813, Maximilian I Joseph von Bayern, King of Bavaria, founded the Botanische Staatssammlung München as an institution to preserve and curate the Royal herbarium.
He bought the important collections of the botanist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber, a student of Carl von Linné, and later on unified these collections with the herbarium of the University of München.
In 1817, Maximilian I Joseph sent the young botanist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius on a Brazilian expedition that lasted three years.

By the end the 19th century, reflecting the personal preferences of Emperor Dom Pedro II (1825–1891), the National Museum started to invest in the areas of the anthropology, paleontology and archaeology.
The Emperor was still a very popular figure when he was deposed by a military coup in 1889, so the republicans tried to erase the symbols of the Empire.

Although closely allied to the coconut, botanists realized by the early 1800s that the palm was not a coconut and a new genus was recognized.
The gru-gru was moved to the new genus in 1845.

Martius took part in the large imperial Austrian scientific expedition mounted by Emperor Franz I. Martius was included on the recommendation of the King of Bavaria, and he remained in Brazil from 1817 to 1820.
He eventually collected about 6,500 species of plant, gathered during his exploration (with fellow Bavarian, Johann von Spix) of the provinces of Sao Paulo, Pernambuco, Bahia, and elsewhere - exploring the Amazon up to the borders of Peru.
