Obituary - 2002 Lord Charlie Hambro
The Lord Hambro, who died suddenly in London on Thursday aged 72, represented many of the virtues of the old City of London, but found himself a witness to the break-up of his family's merchant banking business in the new world of global trading houses.
Hambros operated in old-fashioned family partnership style, but the post-war intake, which included Charlie and his dashing, jazz-loving cousin Jocelyn, brought a new dynamism in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Hambro maintained a string of directorships, notably of P and O, where for many years he had been a close friend and business associate of the chairman, Lord Sterling.
