Seyfert galaxy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seyfert galaxies are spiral or irregular galaxies containing an extremely bright nucleus, most likely caused by a supermassive fl hole, that can sometimes outshine the surrounding galaxy.
Seyfert galaxies are characterized by extremely bright nuclei, and spectra which have very bright emission lines of hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, and oxygen.
In some Type 2 Seyfert galaxies, the broad component can be observed in polarized light; it is believed that light from the broad-line region is scattered by a hot, gaseous halo surrounding the nucleus, allowing us to view it indirectly.

 Carl Keenan Seyfert (1911-1960)
Carl Keenan Seyfert was born on February 11, 1911 as the son of a pharmacist in Cleveland, Ohio,, where he also got his school education.
Seyfert was a member in several professional societies, including the American Astronomical Society, where he served on the Council from 1955 to 1958, and the British Royal Astronomical Society.
Carl Seyfert died on June 13, 1960 in Nashville; Tennessee, in an automobile accident, aged 49.

Carl Keenan Seyfert was an American astronomer and astrophysicist whose interests in photometry, the spectra of stars and galaxies, and the structure of the Milky Way resulted in the identification and study of the type of galaxy that now bears his name.
Seyfert was born on February 11, 1911 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Seyfert's original proposal, however, that the six were grouped together because of a chance meeting between objects at different distances is not now the accepted explanation.

 * Seyfert galaxies - (Astronomy): Definition
Seyfert galaxies are usually spiral galaxies whose nuclei are exceptionally bright.
Seyfert galaxies are spirals with very strong emission line sources in their cores.
N galaxies are compact galaxies, and as a class are intermediate between Seyfert galaxies and quasars in properties of form, color, spectra, redshift, and optical and radio variability.

 Seyfert, Carl (Keenan)
Seyfert was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and studied at Harvard.
The gases at their centres are subject to explosions which cause them to move violently, with speeds of many thousands of kilometres per second relative to the centre of the galaxy in the case of type I, and of several hundreds of kilometres per second in the case of type II.
In 1951, Seyfert began a study of the objects now known as Seyfert's Sextet: a group of diverse extragalactic objects, of which five are spiral nebulae and one an irregular cloud.

Seyfert's Sextet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seyfert's Sextet is a group of galaxies about 190 million light-years away in the constellation Serpens Caput.
Another is not a galaxy in its own right but rather a string of stars torn loose from one of the other galaxies by gravitational pull.
The group was discovered by Carl Keenan Seyfert in the 1940s.

Science Fair Projects - Seyfert galaxy
They are named for the astronomer Carl Seyfert, who studied them extensively in the 1940s.
These emission lines exhibit strong Doppler broadening, which implies velocities from 500 to 4000 km/s, and are believed to originate in an accretion disk surrounding the central fl hole.
This effect was first discovered in the Type 2 Seyfert NGC 1068.

 Seyfert's Sextet
In 1951, Carl Keenan Seyfert (1911-1960) investigated a group of galaxies around NGC 6027 which is since known as Seyfert's Sextet (Seyfert 1951).
Hickson and some other astronomers think that NGC 6027e (after Seyfert), his H79b1, may be a tidal extension of NGC 6027, his H79b, a cloud of interstellar matter ejected by its parent galaxy because of tidal interaction with its neighbors, and not a separate galaxy of its own.
