Carl Kress   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Carl Kress, along with Eddie Lang, can be considered THE founding father of jazz guitar.
In the 1930's Kress had switched over to the guitar and beginning in 1932 recorded some of the finest duets in jazz guitar history with Eddie Lang and again in 1934 with Dick McDonough.
Throughout the 30's and 40's Kress maintained a somewhat low profile by playing in and around New York City as a radio and studio guitarist, and in the 1950's could be seen as the guitarist for the Garry Moore television show.

 Classic Jazz Guitar - Guitarists
Carl Kress (1907 - 1965) began his music career in the early 1920's in Newark, New Jersey, while still a teenager.
As early as the late 1920's Carl Kress was an established musician playing and recording in such venues as the Paul Whiteman Band and with Red Nichols.
In the 1930's Kress was in very high demand by orchestras and studios and as a result has left a significant number of recordings of his playing.

Carl Kress | The Bear Rocks
Kress played with Paul Whiteman in 1926 and then became a very busy studio musician, recording with all of the top white musicians (including Bix Beiderbecke, Red Nichols' Five Pennies, and two classic duets with Eddie Lang) in those segregated days.
Kress often teamed up with fellow guitarist Dick Mcdonough in the 1930s, he co-owned the Onyx Club on 52nd Street for a time, and continued working in the studios into the 1960s, playing during his last years in a duo with George Barnes.
Most of Carl Kress' solo and duet (with Mcdonough) recordings from the 1930s are long overdue to be reissued.

 1934 Gibson L-5 Kress
Kress' duets with Eddie Lang, Dick McDonough and George Barnes are essentials in any jazz guitar library, and his innovative tuning style is still used today by chord melody mavens like Marty Grosz and Doug Mattocks.
So influential among guitarists was Kress that he was favored by Gibson with both an endorsement contract and a custom built guitar as well, crafted to his particular specifications.
Given Kress' use of a low Bb tuning, it's possible that Gibson could have voiced the top to ensure that the bass response would be equal to the guitar's sparkling high register.

George Barnes - Free Music Downloads, Videos, Lyrics, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
A major player who has always been underrated, George Barnes was one of the first to record on electric guitar (accompanying blues singers) and was a top studio guitarist during much of his career.
Although he performed in many types of settings in the 1950s, Barnes did not gain much recognition until he teamed up with fellow guitarist Carl Kress (whose sophisticated chord voicings perfectly complemented Barnes' solos) in the early '60s.
After Kress' death in 1965, Barnes often collaborated with the younger guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, but it was his period as co-leader of a quartet with cornetist Ruby Braff (1973-1975) that gave Barnes his greatest fame, shortly before his death.

EDDIE LANG - PIONEERS OF JAZZ GUITAR
This essential reissue has all of Eddie Lang's guitar features leaving out only a few numbers in which he led a bigger group, the two Lang/Carl Kress duets, the Kress/Dick McDonough duets, and all of Kress' unaccompanied solos.
The Lang numbers mostly duets with Arthur Schutt, Frank Signorelli, or Rube Bloom offering quiet support on piano were unprecedented in jazz at the time.
The most memorable moments on this CD are the two Lang/Kress collaborations, classics from 1932 called "Pickin' My Way" and "Feelin' My Way." Lang's single note lines work perfectly with Kress' advanced chords, and it is surprising that no arranger has transcribed these wonderful performances and orchestrated them for a larger group.

CQCD-2752 Giants of the Acoustic Jazz Guitar 2 - The Great Duets   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
This second volume of Giants Of The Acoustic Jazz Guitar, traces the line of development that links the first, mainly improvised guitar duets of Eddie Lang (aka Blind Willie Dunn) and Lonnie Johnson, to the slightly later 'through composed' duets of Lang and Carl Kress.
It then continues on to demonstrate how Kress and Dick McDonough advanced this completely orchestrated style.
The last three tracks, typical of McDonough's last recordings, show how he used the 'two guitar' sound - both improvised and written - to heighten the colouration of his own studio ensemble.

 Speechless by Mike Chapman
"Mike Chapman comes from a long line of distinguished plectrum guitar players dating back to the '20s like Eddie Lang, Dick McDonough and Carl Kress, who with consummate skill played a mix of solo lines and chordal melodies to great effect, using the guitar in a pianistic way.
The range of artistry and music styles presented here is broadly romantic, comprising very English sounding original chord melodies, bluegrass ragtime influences, Ike lsaacs numbers, Spanish inflections, swing, O'Carolan and a Bamey Kessell Latin tune.
Honeysuckle Rose is a highlight as are the originals, This Ones for You and Careful on the Crossing, and throughout the album the notes played on a large bodied acoustic guitar resonate clearly, balance well and sustain beautifully."
