Carl Macek started Streamline Pictures, an American film company best known for their dubbing and distribution of the Studio Ghibli films: The Castle of Cagliostro, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service, in 1988.
As a fan of Studio Ghibli's films, Carl did not think Laputa - The Castle in the Sky (of which Streamline was the distributor) had received the quality of dubbing that a Ghibli film deserved.
Macek, which in the eyes of many fans meant it involved Streamline Pictures.

To be fair, Carl Macek does deserve a tremendous amount of credit because without his efforts it's very possible that the anime industry in both America and Japan would not exist as it does today.
However, fans from that time still condemn Carl Macek for his resolute insistence during personal appearances and interviews that he was staunchly defending the cultural and artistic integrity of anime in America when the results of Streamline's video output clearly show otherwise.
Macek has been away from direct involvement in the anime industry, his reputation among anime fans has largely been lost to time and attrition.

In the mid ’80s, Macek the Visionary created "Robotech," which, in terms of its content, was one of the most ambitious animated series ever seen on American television.
Macek the Butcher, to get to his other persona, also rewrote plotlines, replaced the music and, in his view, "improved" various aspects of the original stories.
Two of the series Macek used for "Robotech" were "Southern Cross" and "Mospeada." The first was a flop in Japan while the second was only a modest success.

Robotech was the brainchild of Carl Macek who, working with the company Harmony Gold USA, wanted to do a faithful adaptation of a Japanese Animation import (as opposed to previous Japanimation shows which had been butchered down to kiddie-fare level when brought to North America).
The episode problem was solved when Macek decided to pad the series with episodes from other shows.
When it was all done Macek had a total of 85 episodes of the new series, Robotech, ready for the syndication market.

At Akon 6 in June 1995 I interviewed Carl Macek for about 45 minutes about Nadia and I discovered that he was in the process of finishing the rest of the series in a edited form, and that it would come out in eight volumes in 1996.
I called Macek and he told me that they had not done anything more since I talked to him the year before (no more work on the scripts, no recording sessions, nothing) and that it was now all up to Orion Home Video (Streamline's new distributor).
Their focus is on current US releases in anime, and for the past year all of us (Trish, Carl Horn, Julie, and myself) were working on the assumption that the article would run after about four or five of the eight volumes had been released.
